Project Description
Need to Know is a news and current affairs media project from WNET.ORG, the leading provider of news, current affairs and documentary content for public television. Premiering in the spring of 2010, it will combine a major 24/7 online platform and a weekly, one-hour primetime television broadcast, in magazine format, each Friday evening.

Responsibilities
We are seeking an interactive programmer to work with our editorial team to create online data visualizations and RIAs. The qualified candidate will build both front-end applications and data-mining tools with the ultimate goal of taking data sets and research from our reporters and producing content that informs, surprises, and enlightens our users.

The candidate is:

* A web coder with a strong design sense
* An experienced developer (3+ years) with a wide range of front-end programming skills (Flash/AS3/Flex, dHTML/jQuery, CSS, PHP) as well as experience integrating with the backend (LAMP, Ruby, Python)
* Used to crunching large datasets and turning them into beautiful, interactive visualizations
* Confident in your strong UI/UX skills
* Comfortable with design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator) and rapid wireframing apps (OmniGraffle)
* Experienced with visualization packages for Flash as well as other platforms (Flare, Many Eyes)
* Experienced with WordPress
* Someone who can work closely and collaborate with non-technical staff as well as other coders
* Proud of your existing, publicly available portfolio

You like to:

* Experiment with new APIs from news organizations and .govs
* Follow the latest developments in data visualization
* Obsessively tweak your pixel-perfect projects while still shipping on time
