Ecommerce search engine's looking for a core developer to join our team of high-tech book nerds. is a global ecommerce search engine that connects shoppers with over 125 million books for sale--new, used, rare, and out-of-print. Launched in 1997, our site attracts a passionate global audience of bibliophiles. In the past 12 months, we've been mentioned everywhere from the Wall Street Journal to Library Journal, NPR to Internet Retailer.

We're a stable 4-person developer-driven company based in Berkeley, CA. We offer the stability of a larger company, but with startup-style flexibility (low hierarchy, flexible hours, freedom to affect product direction). Our office is located in downtown Berkeley's business district transit hub, near BART and UC Berkeley.

Not surprisingly, we're a LAMP shop: Perl/CPAN, Apache, mod_perl, Mason, MySQL, CentOS Linux, etc. We're also powered by whiteboards, shared brainstorming, and the love and support of a passionate user base.


As one of the core developers of, you will be involved with product vision, development, debugging, and maintenance. You'll have a hand in every part of the product lifecycle, working alongside two long-time Perl coders in a friendly, low-hierarchy workspace.

Code doesn't live in a vacuum; you'll need to be able to take into account factors like user experience, analytics, marketing, and budgeting when making decisions about the product. We're looking for someone self-motivated, and willing to take responsibility for new ideas and initiatives.

* 2+ years experience building large web-based applications in Perl, Python, or Ruby
* 1+ years experience with production Perl (the more the better)
* Comfortable with standard Unix command line environment, tools, servers (e.g. editors, source code control, Apache, etc.)
* Experience with data processing/analysis, regular expressions, and Web-based APIs (in any language)
* Knowledge of HTML/CSS, some JavaScript
* Ability to work in an environment with rapidly changing priorities
* Database/SQL experience a plus
* Being multilingual a plus
* Love of books and reading a big plus
