The City of Poquoson is looking for a dynamic and energetic Library Director to lead our award winning City Library. Poquoson is a small coastal community located in the larger metropolitan area of Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Library has an annual budget of $850,000, a staff of 11.95 FTE and serves 13,000 members.
This position performs complex professional and difficult administrative work managing all aspects of the operations of the City Library, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work involves setting policies and goals under the direction of the City Manager. Departmental supervision is exercised over all personnel within the department.
Responsibilities
- Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates the operation of the Library; formulates long range strategic plans including services, technology, programming, staffing, budget, collection, facility and public relations; develops and implements library policies to fulfill the mission of the library.
- Develops and supervises library personnel including training, hiring, disciplining, evaluating and assigning duties and work schedules.
- Develops and administers the library operations budget; pursues additional funds via grants and donations.
- Selects, reviews and maintains the library collection both print and non-print media.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the public, the Library Advisory Board, City officials and with State officials; serves as liaison to the Friends of the Library.
- Prepares and coordinates the preparation of reports, proposals, contracts, or grants related to the library. Compiles statistical and financial reports for the City Manager, Library Board and the Library of Virginia.
- Prepares press releases on library news and programs and guides public library public relations activities.
- Represents the library at local and state meetings and participates in professional organizations.
- Assesses community needs and develops coordinated efforts with other organizations to enhance library services.
- Coordinates the maintenance and repairs of the facility, equipment and furnishings.
Qualifications
Master Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited graduate school, and Commonwealth of Virginia Librarian’s Professional Certification. Supplemented by a minimum of five (5) years previous experience and /or training that includes supervisory work in public administration and professional library work. Demonstrated knowledge of library administration, library principles, methods, materials and practices; library reference, adult and children's services; library computer system applications and equipment; cataloging procedures and problems. Demonstrated ability to analyze library service problems and participate effectively in solving them; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, associates, and the general public.
