Research assistant, DNA hash pooling
August 5, 2010 4:24 PM

Manchester Metropolitan University, UK

An enthusiastic Research Assistant is required to work on a new and exciting project at the interface of molecular biology and computer science. DNA Hash Pooling is a novel technique for the detection of target DNA sequences in mixed populations of DNA, with minimal amounts of sequencing. Supported by the EPSRC-funded Bridging the Gaps: NanoInfoBio project (www.nanoinfobio.org), the appointed Research Assistant will be responsible for experimental validation of this technique using molecular biology methodologies such as DNA extraction, PCR, RFLP and automated sequencing.

You should have a minimum of a good B.Sc. (Hons) degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field of biology, molecular biology, or microbiology, an excellent knowledge of molecular biology techniques and good knowledge of microbial ecology or microbial phylogenetics. Although no formal computing qualifications are required, experience of bioinformatics packages for the phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences would be an advantage.
