Job Description The Operations and Engineering Division is seeking a Software Engineer. The successful candidate should be a talented individual who will design, code, and integrate Java based GUI graphical software applications used by astronomers to prepare observations for the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes. Works with teams of engineers and end users to help derive software requirements, implementation approaches, and testing strategies. Responsible for the maintenance of existing software components and the full life cycle development of new software features.
Requirements The successful candidate must have:
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• The ability to effectively utilize programming technologies to code algorithms that satisfy specified software requirements
• Working knowledge of modern programming paradigms including Object Oriented design and development.
• A team-player mentality
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in Java and Java-related technologies, and working knowledge of data structures, databases, operating systems, programming languages, compliers, and multi-threaded program execution preferred.
• A background in math, physics or astronomy is also helpful.
• BS or MS in computer science. Candidates with a degree in a related engineering discipline with past programming experience may also be considered. This is a mid-level position requiring 3 years of experience in software development.
