Production Technologist (Microbiology)

Overall Job Summary:
The Senior Production Technologist (Microbiology) is responsible for all microbiological activities related to culturing of bacteria for the purpose of vaccine antigen production.
Specific Accountabilities:
  • Responsible for all stages of bacteria culturing from seed vial through to production culture. Cultures will be grown on plates, in flasks and bioreactors.

  • Responsible for the safe operation of the production area. This includes monitoring and ensuring the proper operation and upkeep of production equipment used for culturing, as well as ensuring production areas associated with culturing are maintained clean and organized.

  • Ensure quality and schedules are met. This includes providing leadership and working with Production Technologists to ensure equipment and solutions needed for production are prepared properly and according to schedule.

  • Responsible for monitoring and controlling the process. This is done by performing in-process testing as required for each culture stage. This may include both standard and specialized methods.

  • Responsible for complying with regulatory, GMP, safety and bio-safety requirements. This will include following and recording all activities using controlled production documents.

Education, Work Experience & Competencies:
  • B.Sc in Industrial Microbiology, Applied Microbiology or a related science is required.

  • 2 years hands-on experience in large scale bacteria culturing, bio-processing or aseptic production is required.

  • Technical Skills preferred include: experience with risk level 2 micro-organisms; good aseptic techniques; knowledge of bio-safety; strong theoretical and practical knowledge of large-scale bacterial culturing, GMP’s, SOP’s and Safe Laboratory Techniques

Experience working safely and accurately with laboratory and industrial equipment
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Strong organizational, planning, problem solving and decision-making skills

  • Ability to interpret and perform written procedures

  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a manufacturing setting. Due to business needs this position will operate in a multi-shift environment and may require the scheduling of overtime.
