GIS and Digital Resources Librarian

The Library at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for the continuing full-time position of GIS and Digital Resources Librarian.
Under the direction of the Head of the Maps, Data and Government Information Centre (MADGIC), the incumbent is responsible for the co-ordination of electronic resources within the department and in representing MADGIC digital collection support requirements to other library departments and externally as required with respect to GIS.
The incumbent is responsible for providing general reference and instruction for maps, data and government information resources and manages an assigned area of the MADGIC collection which duties include collection development and reference specialization. The incumbent develops, manages and delivers library services related to geospatial data. (Area assigned is GIS resources). The incumbent has a leading role in web and social media development for MADGIC. Participates in other duties as required.
Applicants must have an Undergraduate degree plus a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited library school; Knowledge of GIS acquired through university studies or professional practice; Some professional experience providing support for GIS, cartographic and/or government information services, preferably in an academic setting; Knowledge of digital information resources and applications; demonstrated ability to prepare and conduct presentations and teaching sessions related to GIS; and a strong emphasis on client services.
In addition, applicants must have:
Strong knowledge of reference techniques and descriptive metadata for print and electronic information resources, particularly those relevant to maps, data and government information.
Experience in developing GIS, geospatial and cartographic collections in support of research and teaching.
High level of computer literacy and knowledge of digital information resources and applications, including general Internet use and web content development experience.
Strong commitment to client services, demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work in a demanding and highly automated environment.
Superior communication skills, ability to provide library instruction and effective research assistance, and to work well in both team-based and self-directed environments.
The MacOdrum Library promotes excellence at Carleton University by collecting, preserving, and providing access to information resources and services for our teaching, learning, research and administrative communities, wherever they are located.
The Library has a strategic plan which is closely aligned to the University’s strategic plan, Defining Dreams, and to the Carleton Academic Plan. Key priorities for the Library are scholarly communication, undergraduate creative and critical enquiry, digitization and preservation of archives and special collections; research data management including geospatial and social science datasets.
The Library consists of a main building at the heart of the campus which holds over 3.7 million items and an on-campus storage facility with a capacity of 800,000 volumes. There are 135 FTE positions in the Library including 28 librarians, 80 support staff, 6 management staff and many part-time student positions. The Library participates in co-operative ventures with area libraries and museums as well as libraries in research institutions across Canada. It is also part of the Ontario Scholars Portal consortium of academic libraries.
Applications will be accepted until August 17, 2012, and must include a statement of interest, a current résumé or curriculum vitae. Additionally, candidates must provide the name of three references. If candidates are short listed, their references will be expected to provide a letter of support to the search committee.
As part of the interview process, shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a public presentation on a topic related to the position.
