Overview

Participatory Culture Foundation, (PCF) a growing 501c3 non-profit organization, is dedicated to supporting a democratic media by creating an open and decentralized video environment and supporting individuals with disability. Through software and advocacy, we (participatoryculture.org) work to build a fairer, more open, more inclusive, and more democratic media space. PCF work reaches more than 2.5 million individuals around the world every month.

PCF is a global leader in open-source, mission-focused technology. Our work includes: Universal Subtitles, a global web community and toolset for volunteers and organizations to make online video accessible for people with disabilities and people who speak different languages around the world; Miro, our free and open-source desktop video player, built on open standards and designed to encourage decentralization of video hosting; and Miro Community, an open-source video presentation service that organizations and communities use to quickly create a beautiful video website.

In the past few years, PCF has attracted over $3 million in funding from national foundations including John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, Open Society Institute, Surdna Foundation, and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Position

PCF is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Development to design and execute a comprehensive and sustainable development program for this entrepreneurial and quickly growing organization.

Reporting directly to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Development will design and drive fund development efforts to meet annual operating revenue goals in the range of $1M from a variety of sources but focusing on major gifts and foundations. This position is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, strategic development professional to help take PCF to a new level organizationally and, in the process, make a significant contribution to lasting social change.

Location

Virtual office structure, individual can work from anywhere, must be willing to travel. There is a PCF office in New York City, if you happen to be based there.

Responsibilities

· Create and implement a strategic and sustainable fund development program; establish goals, benchmarks and metrics for evaluation; ensure that appropriate systems and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals

· Oversee all aspects of individual and foundation support including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding prospects and donors

· Lead the preparation of high-quality case statements, grant proposals and grant reports

· Partner with the Executive Director to manage his role in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors

· Partner with the Board of Directors and friends of the organization to manage their roles in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors

· Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive and sustainable communications plan that supports PCF's mission and promotes the success of PCF’s initiatives

Qualifications

· 3+ years of demonstrated success building and leading the development function in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial nonprofit organization

· Proven record of fundraising success with individual donors and foundations

· Substantial experience designing and implementing comprehensive fundraising plans for all funding streams including major gifts, corporate, and foundation giving, with a track record of raising at least $1M annually and experience significantly growing revenues over time

· Passionate commitment to PCF’s mission, vision and strategic direction

· Exceptional communication skills; articulate, with proven ability to write effectively and speak persuasively

· Demonstrated ability to think strategically while executing tactically within a resource-constrained environment

· Ability to work independently and to be comfortable with working with colleagues in a virtual office structure.

· Capability to thrive in a small, entrepreneurial and growing nonprofit organization

· Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills combined with creativity, flexibility and a great sense of humor

· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
