Bilingual Help Desk Specialist

Responsibilities: The Legal Help Desk Specialist responds to requests for information and legal assistance through Lambda Legal’s Legal Help Desk and intake process. The Legal Help Desk Specialist answers a high volume of telephone calls, faxes, emails and letters, logging requests in a database. The Legal Help Desk Specialist meets with attorneys regularly to screen intakes for possible Lambda Legal involvement; each intake is prepared for attorney review and follow-up, if appropriate. The Specialist works with attorneys to respond to each call, providing general legal information, publications, and contacts to LGBT-friendly resources and organizations. The Specialist sends and keeps current Legal Help Desk resources, including referral lists and charts of legal information.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a clear and patient phone manner, a commitment to absolute confidentiality, good written and oral communication skills, and be responsible, motivated, detail-oriented, organized, self-starting, and fluent on the computer (Word and Lotus Notes preferred, database experience desirable). Ability to handle and prioritize large volume of intake calls, often from people facing crisis or significant problems, is critical; thus experience with hotlines or intake calls is quite helpful. An interest in LGBT- and HIV-related legal issues is key. Fluency in Spanish is mandatory. A firm 2 year commitment is required.
