Public Radio Producer in New York
September 3, 2010 5:16 AM
I am currently a per diem public radio producer working with National Public Radio's On the Media but this per diem position will end at the end of 2010, or when I find permanent employment.
Although I graduated from college with a journalism degree in 2003, I quickly fell into a position in information technology. After a few years, I found myself longing to return to journalism, specifically radio journalism. I decided to apply for an internship at On the Media in late 2009, and I began working at on the show as an intern in January of 2010. While my tenure in the position was only supposed to be three months, I ended up staying on as a volunteer through June, and I was eventually picked up as a per diem producer in July.
Since I have been working with On the Media, I have produced numerous segments, ushering them from the story pitch through recording and editing, and I have become comfortable with the myriad technical components required of an Assistant Producer such as editing in Pro Tools, operating a mixing board, ISDN connections and so on. My editorial responsibilities have included writing copy around interviews, fact checking, and creating story preps for the show's hosts to use during interviews.
Additionally, I have been active in maintaining a consistent update schedule for the show’s various social media outlets. During my tenure, the number of people following On the Media’s Twitter feed has more than tripled, and the number of people following the On the Media Facebook profile has more than doubled. Most recently, I have been put in charge of the technical aspects of On the Media’s weekly newsletter.
Working in public radio has been a dream come true for me, and I have been grateful for my experiences as an intern and a per diem producer at On the Media. I would relish the opportunity to become a full time public radio producer. With nearly a year of experience working at On the Media, I have demonstrated a value to the program that I would be able to continue to develop as a full time member of the staff on any public radio show.
Please feel free to contact me for a resume and references.
