Summer researcher for academic study of iPhone ecosystem
May 16, 2010 10:06 PM

I am a professor at a businesss school studying the early days of the iPhone, specifically, the launch of the AppStore and the effect that legal application sales had on the community of jail broken apps already released at that point. I am looking for a research assistant to work remotely with me this summer, tracing a list of jail broken applications to see whether they were made available on the AppStore. This will probably require contacting developers, and will certainly require excellent online research skills, familiarity with the iPhone, and some basic technical knowledge. I would hope for a candidate who would be familiar with the jailbreaking scene, knows their way around Cydia, and can talk with hackers/hardcore developers easily. Thus, I turn to Metafilter, since the undergrads I would usually use for RAs don't have this background.

I have research funds available to pay reasonably, though this probably won't be full-time for any lengthy period, and hope that I could also make the research useful and interesting for those interested in academia or, eventually, an MBA.
