Long version:

The Carolina Digital Library and Archives (CDLA) serves to develop, create, manage, preserve, and provide access to digital collections held or managed by the University Library. It consists of three groups: digital production services, digital publishing services, and research and development. The CDLA works closely with Library collection and systems staff, as well as other technological and collection units across the campus to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of digital collection services. The Research and Development group provides programming and technology consulting support for the other units in the CDLA and researches new and relevant digital library technologies that further the CDLA's mission. As a member of the Carolina Digital Library and Archives (CDLA), the Digital Library Programmer provides application development and scripting expertise in support of the Documenting the American South digital publishing program and other CDLA initiatives. This is a one year time-limited position. The programmer works in collaboration with the other members of the Digital Library Technology Research and Development Group to develop software for CDLA projects. Participates in the full life cycle of application development, from design through implementation and support. Researches new technologies and techniques and their application to the CDLA. Plans, implements and tests software upgrades and enhancements, working with system and database administration staff as necessary. Coordinates and assists with user acceptance testing. Works collaboratively with other library staff and with campus partners and vendors to develop and implement innovative solutions for creating and managing new digital collections; participates in planning and policy-making around digital initiatives, including definition of standards and best practices for creation and preservation of digital assets. The position requires a thorough understanding of and familiarity with relational databases, a strong grasp of object-oriented programming and design, and an understanding of WWW programming, including protocols like HTTP and markup languages. The Digital Library Programmer should have experience with at least one of the following scripting languages: PHP, Python, or Perl, as well as having a working knowledge of SQL and connecting databases to web applications. Specific competencies are required for the different banded levels and roles. This position is being recruited for at the Contributing Competency Level under the Career Banding program. The hiring range for this position is $39,916 - $49,400. Salary Grade Equivalent is 74.
