Looking for a systems administrator to support a department at Columbia University.

Here's a boilerplate:

The Systems Administrator reports to both the Psychology Faculty Computer Committee and the Senior Staff Associate for Psychology Research Computing. He/She supports the various Information Technology needs of the Department of Psychology and it's faculty, staff and graduate students. The general department environment consists of 175+ computers, twenty faculty labs and approximately a dozen servers.

Responsibilities:
- Administer department servers, their associated network, authentication, file, print, mail, database, web and backup services.
- Provide on-site & remote end-user desktop, laptop and mobile support in a mixed-OS environment (Mac OSX, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android).
- Investigate and troubleshoot hardware, software and application issues.
- Work closely with faculty and research staff to perform detailed needs assessment, researching, evaluating, testing and implementing new software, hardware, networking and systems.
- Participate in the formulation and implementation of policies relevant to computer usage in the department and help maintain the security and reliability of systems.
- Communicate and coordinate with outside vendors in both pre-purchase and post purchase (warranty support) situations.
- Interface with other departments as required (Columbia University IT, Facilities, Procurement, etc).
- Supervise one or more part-time employees and oversee outside contractors and consultants.
- Maintain two computer labs used for teaching (22 iMacs), an equipment inventory as well as perform ongoing assessments as to equipment repair/replacement needs.
- Orient and train new users, employees and teaching assistants on available computing resources.
- Maintain user accounts, security groups and permissions for technical resources

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in experience required.
- 3-5 years of experience in an IT operations role
- Experience troubleshooting Windows software and hardware issues
- Experience supporting Unix systems (either Mac OSX or Linux).

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant:
- Considerable aptitude in negotiation, communication and human relations skills
- Strong technical and analytical computer software, hardware, networking and problem solving abilities
- General knowledge of networking (TCP/IP, OSI Model), various network protocols (SMB, HTTP, SMTP, SSH, FTP) and network security (Firewalls, IPSec, ACLs, VLANs, VPN)
- Agility in toggling between server systems and client-side issues
- Attention to detail; problems are often caused by tiny variations in configuration
- Fast learner with the ability to become proficient in a variety of applications with only minimal exposure so as to be a friendly, knowledgeable and accessible resource to assist in troubleshooting problems as they present themselves

Preferred Qualifications:
- Server operating systems: Windows Server, Mac OSX Server, Ubuntu Linux
- Server software: Apache, MySQL, LDAP/Active Directory, Samba, OpenSSH, VNC
- Laptop/Desktop Operating Systems: Windows, Mac OSX, Ubuntu Linux
- Server virtualization: Experience with VMWare vSphere, KVM or XEN
- Client virtualization: VMWare Fusion, Parallels Desktop, VirtualBox
- Office applications: Microsoft Office, iWork, Thunderbird, Firefox, Adobe Creative Suite
- Statistical software: SPSS, SAS, R, MatLab, Mathematica
- Encryption: OpenSSL & x509 Certificates, FileVault2, TrueCrypt, Bitlocker
- Interfacing with large complex organizations, preferably university or medical environments

payscale: Commensurate with experience
