Product Engineer (Solar)
December 3, 2011 2:32 PM

This position is based in San Jose, California and reports directly to the CEO.

We are looking for candidates with practical hands-on experience of reliability testing and qualification of new materials for the solar photovoltaic or semiconductor markets and general experience of solar panel operation and installation. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fully funded venture backed clean-tech startup. It is a challenging, full time position for a self-driven individual. Ideally you have been a top technical contributor at a solar or semiconductor company executing qualification and field testing of solar panels and are looking to extend that in a challenging customer facing role.

Your job will be to execute reliability testing of product samples at both internal and external test facilities. To coordinate with customers to deliver product samples and prototypes for their own testing and to interactively respond and resolve any issues that arise during the test process. In addition you will work with customers to build field installations of solar panels and setup real-time data collection and monitoring to demonstrate the unique value propositions of Enki’s product. This is a typical startup, you should be willing and able to work hard with limited resources as part of a tight-knit group and be flexible and accommodating to changing priorities and circumstances.

• Coordinate sample preparation, delivery and testing of typical IEC61215 tests with both internal test equipment and at multiple outside test vendors.
• Coordinate and execute preparation and delivery of customer samples (both coupons and full solar panels).
• Work with customers to achieve qualification of Enki products according to their test protocols.
• Source solar panels from both customers & vendors, coordinate & execute testing and preparation, then execute field installation of those panels for long-term outdoor monitoring and real-time data collection of energy output.
• Utilize basic software/scripting skills to automate outdoor monitoring data-collection, analysis and display.
• Present plans and progress updates to the management team and board of directors.
• Work closely with customers and the internal chemistry team to replicate, identify and analyze failures using typical thin-film characterization methods such as SEM, AFM, TEM, FTIR, XDS, XPS, SIMS.
• Travel as needed.

As our company grows this position will grow to leadership of an expanded team of product and application engineers that work with our customers to introduce new products that improve the efficiency and energy yield of solar panels.

Qualifications

A degree in Science and/or Engineering discipline such as Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science is required. A proven track record of high performance in an independent role focused on product introduction and reliability. At the time of appointment, the candidate must hold appropriate employment authorization to work in US.

Additional qualifications include: Knowledge and experience with typical reliability test protocols for solar module or semiconductor products such as 85/85, Temp Cycle, Freeze/Thaw is required; Knowledge of and experience with thin-film characterization methods; Basic software scripting skills including *NIX and DOS and scripting languages like PERL, Python, PHP, simple SQL queries; Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
