MetaFilter is hiring a part-time web and DB administrator
April 26, 2016 9:28 AM
We're looking to bring on a web and database administrator to provide on-going regular maintenance and support for MetaFilter's backend, plus possible web development.
MetaFilter is a small internet-based company with employees in multiple countries, supporting a vibrant, long-standing online community frequently recognized as among the most civil and thoughtful places for discussion on the web. You'd be working in a technical capacity to maintain the stability and performance of the site and to collaborate with the men and women on our moderation staff to resolve tech issues and, where applicable, improve site functionality.
A candidate must be comfortable with:
- SQL Server
- Apache
- Ubuntu
- Window Server 2008
- Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, CloudFront)
- git and Github
Web development experience, particularly with ColdFusion, is a plus but not required.
Primary duties will be weekly maintenance of SQL Server database, Apache, and Ubuntu and Windows servers; verifying integrity of site backup processes; reviewing back-end performance and tuning SQL queries as needed; and reviewing and managing disk space on the servers. A candidate with web development skills would also be responsible for debugging/tweaking ColdFusion issues and providing miscellaneous site interface maintenance as needed, and potentially additional site development.
This is a long-term part-time contracting position, with a steady 8-16 hours weekly depending on breadth of a candidate's skillset. It's a telecommuting/work-from-home position; you can set your own schedule, so long as it accommodates communication with the team and arranges maintenance-related site downtime for off-peak hours. There's potential for increased hours and responsibilities for a good candidate interested in expanding their skillset.
MetaFilter aims to foster a diverse community membership, and we are likewise interested in hearing from all qualified candidates, both within the existing community and outside of it. Women, people of color, sexual and gender minorities, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Payscale is $25-40/hr, depending on experience and familiarity with our tech platform.
Apply via email, with a copy of your resume, to mods@metafilter.com, with the subject line "MetaFilter Tech 2016". Feel free to include in your email anything we should know that's not obvious from the resume.
MeFi is one of the web's longest-running communities, founded in 1999. We have about ten thousand active members, who enjoy discussing a wide range of topics on our family of subsites, including general interest link-sharing site MetaFilter, the Q&A site Ask MetaFilter, and media discussion forum FanFare. The site has a rich history and strong community ethos, and is staffed by a small team of paid moderators who interact directly with the site's international userbase 24/7.
