Freelance writer in London needed

We have an occasional need (5-6 times a year) to have someone cover a tradeshow in London. Typically we send somebody, but the cost is getting to be an issue. So we're looking to cultivate a relationship with a solid freelance writer living in London, who would be interested in reporting on these shows.

Typically, it involves two separate pieces of content: (1) Walk the tradeshow floor and write a wrap-up piece of what's new and interesting there, and (2) spend a day in the sessions, pulling mini-stories out of specific ones. We would give a couple of months' advance notice, so that you could make sure you're available on the days needed.

Please reply with a sample or two, as well as your going rate in USD. Thanks!

Contract, project-by-project copywriter/clever packaging writer for consumer electronics

We're demanding and crazy and so busy we're drowning and we're looking for something very rare -- a brilliant, enthusiastic, intuitive write to help us out asap that meets all our weird standards.

First and foremost, you have to be a real, bona fide contractor as defined by our HR department -- business license, paid by the project, take care of your biz taxes in the right way, work off-site for the majority of the time and the whole deal -- in the US only. I'd love to use standard freelance, but I can't. We're happy to work with a one-man shop or a small agency as long as you can slip seamlessly into our Process. (Cue ominous horns.)

Second, you have to be quick, clever, clear and comfortable taking engineering gobledeegook and turning it into concise language that consumers can understand and fall in love with. That means not only writing well, but having a strategic brain -- as well as knowing which battles are important and which are as futile as a fight over the word "dongle" versus the word "receiver" when deadlines are on the line.

Third, you have to be professional enough that we can rely on you -- to only commit to us on jobs you can do well, to follow through, and to keep your cool even when you're getting writing feedback from someone for whom English may be a third or fourth language who speaks only in speeds and feeds.

Fourth, you have to not be scared off by this -- not because it isn't daunting, but because gadgets and gizmos are so cool that they're worth jumping through a few hoops to make even cooler.

Fifth, you should have a good book, a good sense of humor and a strong understanding of brand. Yes, this is like a sense of humor -- it's a given, but we have to say it anyway.

Bonus points for Bay Area, previous experience in consumer electronics, a short stint as a planner, or just an interesting back story that makes us want to spend time working with you.

Technical Writer

For mBalance, a company developing SMS networking servers (routing, applications, storage, billing, etc.)

Looking for a highly competent Technical Writer to produce and manage the product documentation of the mBalance products. The Technical Writer will interact directly with Engineers and process the existing R&D documentation of the TextPass products into end user documentation. The role requires a technical background and an expert knowledge of word processing tools such as MS Word.

Required:

 * Native English language skills;
 * At least 3 years experience as technical writer, preferably in a software product environment;
 * Expert knowledge and experience of word processing, preferably MS Word;
 * Good knowledge and experience of graphic editing tools, preferably MS PowerPoint;
 * Proven ability to conform to company documentation style;
 * Solid technical background supported by technical training;
 * Proven ability to quickly grasp new technical information;
 * Experience with document management;
 * Professional attitude and eagerness to deliver high quality work;
 * Involvement in technical and commercial product document reviews.

It's a great opportunity - cool company, growing very quickly, they know that documentation is a very important part of the process, nice people, good atmosphere. Plus, you'd become my colleague, and I am -as we all know- very good company. If you live outside of Amsterdam/the Netherlands but want to move here, I know the company helps out with the moving process (though I don't know to what extent - I didn't have to move myself).

This is an in-house job based in Amsterdam. Telecommuting is possible to some extent; you'd have to be physically present part of the time, though.

The above is a mix of my own input and the job description we have, by the way, and I typed it in under three minutes. So if it looks goofy, meh. :)

Movable Type Expert Needed

I need someone who knows movable type like the back of their hand and can write me out step by step instructions for simple movable type questions, such as: If I use a three-column template from http://www.thestylearchive.com ... how do I customize the right-hand column so that I can toss my html code into that column? Or exactly what do I click if using SmartFtp? They have what looks like a great visual tutorial, but by step #2 the visual is different from what I downloaded and the tutorial is just speeding along!

I have reached a point where I would rather look stupid and pay someone to stop me rather than just keep being stupid with no end in sight!

So! I'd like to be able to email you simple questions like that from time to time and know that you will have the right answer easily.

There are other programs whose help files frustrated me, although I "get it" quite easily once someone shows me ... so a big plus would be if you felt confident that you could read the manual on other, unfamiliar, software programs and extract the answers for me as well. I think they'll usually all be "duh!" questions like the example.

As for pay, I'm open to your suggestions, but think being able to pay you via paypal, per question or time period or page or whatever would work best. Thanks for reading!

Senior Technical Writer, DNS/DHCP/ENUM

Nominum, a global provider of ENUM-based IP-Application Routing Directory, DNS, and DHCP solutions, is seeking a technical writer for an immediate full-time staff position in Redwood City, California.

The position is as a member of Nominum's technical documentation team and will share responsibility for documenting Nominum's software products.

Successful candidates will relish working in an extremely dynamic environment with competing priorities, and one in which the writer operates with a high degree of autonomy. Applicants with knowledge of Internet architecture, especially DNS, DHCP, and ENUM, are strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience documenting Internet software.

Expertise with Adobe FrameMaker 7.

Comfort in producing both PDF and HTML products.

The ability to work comfortably with minimum guidance in both Windows and UNIX environments doing a variety of online tasks, some of which may be new.

Team worker who enjoys working collaboratively, is comfortable asking questions, and can interact cooperatively with a variety of people.

Desirable Qualifications:

Skill with graphics design programs (preferably Paint Shop Pro), and a proven ability to create high-quality diagrams and graphic representations of abstract concepts.

A working familiarity with the practical details of DNS and DHCP.

Experience documenting and using Java, perl and Python.

Real-world current knowledge of XML.
Experience generating online help using Quadralay WebWorks.

Experience with version control applications, particularly CVS or Subversion.

Be prepared to provide access (online access preferred) to a portfolio of recent work.

scrump's crib notes:

This isn't an entry-level position. You should have a minimum of 3-5 years of TW experience: if you don't, you'll need to be a blow-the-doors-off candidate.
Did I mention this isn't entry-level? We need someone who's been doing this for a while.
We're interested in unorthodox candidates, because in our experience old-school Writers (a la IBM, HP, etc), with the Documentation Plans and the outlines and the being used to deadlines that don't change weekly...they don't do well here. Unusual people who can handle a very fast, results-driven environment tend to do well.
I will read your posting history on MeFi if you contact me, and it will, for better or worse, form part of my impression of you as a candidate. Keep that in mind when applying.
