Graphic redesign of existing Drupal site (NYC)

A Columbia University department is seeking a NYC-based graphic designer to do a visual makeover on a relatively simply Drupal website (and possibly more than one if it works out well).

Contact departmentbusiness@gmail.com to discuss the actual job, timeline, your availability, rates, etc. Employment can be on a contract basis or a part-time hourly basis. Must be a US citizen and eligible for employment.

We would prefer to work with a local freelancer in New York. You don't need to have a huge portfolio, but some experience designing themes in Drupal or another major CMS is necessary. Ability to travel uptown for in-person meetings is helpful.

Columbia University is an equal opportunity employer.

Web Developer

Meaningful Media is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the quality, visibility and impact of social issue media.

We are redesigning our website and need a nonprofit-friendly web developer to bring our vision to life.

Project Details:

The new website will feature the Meaningful Mediapedia, a comprehensive searchable database that aggregates and curates thousands of projects and organizations at the intersection of media and social change. Our new site will be the go-to place for people who care about using media (across mediums, genres and platforms) to communicate about the issues they care about most. The database will encourage user-contributed content and eventually link into a social network that connects students, educators, non-profit organizations, activists, policymakers, journalists, artists, content creators, consumers, distributors and exhibitors.

If you’d like to see more, you can download a PDF showing the design and functionality of the Meaningful Mediapedia here.

Requirements:

We’re a close-knit team and looking for a like-minded developer who’s sociable and committed to the project.

We are still deciding on the right platforms for the job—and will depend on our developer to help us choose the best tools—but are learning towards using an open source platforms such as Drupal or Wordpress that is easily expandable, has a robust content management system, and allows for user-contributed content and different access levels. Developer must have substantial experience in one of these platforms.

We’d prefer someone in LA, but are willing to work with someone remotely if they’re the right fit. We will not consider applicants living outside the United States.

Timeline:

Development work will start in January 2010.

Web developer to install shopping cart on record label website

Dreamboat Records, home to music by a bunch of folk and electronic acts from the UK and a couple of indie film soundtracks, is looking for someone to replace our rather unprofessional and fiddly Paypal-based shopping cart with something more modern, user-friendly (for both customer and order picker), and (probably) self-hosted.

Our main goal with this upgrade is to make it more straightforward to pick and ship orders, and audit sales afterward. At the moment, our total dependence on the Paypal interface (as well as its payment processing) makes that a pain.

For the time being, we're happy to continue to process the credit card payments themselves with Paypal, but suggestions of alternative payment gateways — that will work for a company that is based in the UK but accepts payments from worldwide — are very welcome. Keep in mind that we need to audit both total revenue and revenue after the payment company takes their fee. In general this varies from transaction to transaction in a non-trivial way, so I'm hoping payment gatways report both numbers.

Our website is hosted on a Mediatemple Gridserver, which will give you an idea of what it is capable of, but I'm happy to answer specific questions about the technical parameters. We're told that Ubercart/Drupal/Python and ActiveMerchant/Rails/Ruby are the preferred way of doing things these days, but perhaps you know better. Our needs seem fairly standard, so this should just be a case of installing something, integrating it with a payment gateway, and perhaps setting up an example product or two so I can take it from there.

We'd love to get this done before the end of the year.

[This position was previously advertised on MeFi in a rather different form (involving authorized MP3 downloads). We ran out of time to set that up for the project we needed it for, and went with a pre-rolled solution.]

We (Synapse Studios) need a senior PHP developer with PHP 5/OO experience who can step in and help guide the growth we're expecting in the near-term. We've gotten along now for a few years with some great developers, but no one with structured experience who can bring our architecture and coding methodologies to the next level. That's who we're looking for.

We're also looking for someone that knows how to write clean and efficient PHP5 object oriented code at the enterprise level. Here is a list of our "absolutely-must-have" requirements:

* PHP 5 - object oriented experience
* SQL knowledge: basic and advanced (i.e. stored procedures, views, triggers, etc)
* HTML (can code by hand or in sleep)
* Subversion or other version control systems
* Some HTTP experience (you should know the difference between GET versus POST, what a 404 is versus a 200, 301 redirect, etc)
* Regular expressions (at least able to understand them even if they give you horrible, horrible nightmares)
* Model-View-Controller (MVC) experience (via frameworks such as Kohana, Zend, Cake, or Symfony for example)
* AJAX by way of jQuery, YUI or any other popular libraries
* Knowledge of design patterns
* Apache and mod_rewrite experience
* Linux system administration skills
* Extensive Javascript and CSS knowledge
* Experience with at least one other language (C, Perl, Java, Python, Ruby)
* Using and writing APIs

We need someone on site in Tempe, Arizona, but we're open to helping people relocate.

We're a younger group of motivated web developers and our company is growing rapidly. We keep things fun and interesting, have great office space in the downtown district, and do our best to give back to our community. Find more out about us at our site.

This is your first test, so don't screw it up...
To apply, send ALL of the following to jobs at synapsestudios dot com:

1. Your resume
2. Some samples showing off what you can do
3. Include the job title in the subject line of the email

Budding, all-round web guy and interested party

Hi, this isn't so much a job opportunity, more of an opportunity for someone who has the creative chops, and the desire to at least explore the possibility of a business venture. I have what I believe is a good embryonic idea to create a dating site that doesn't make the user feel like a commodity, taking a couple of cues from the metafilter community model.

But my experience of creating websites is pretty limited to HTML and some graphic design, and not much else. I really don't know what programming languages and such are required these days, and want someone who knows their stuff.

What I'm looking for is someone who wants a project to work on in their spare time. Someone to develop the back, and front-end of this kind of community website. I intend to provide creative input, ideas, graphics and such, and am also happy to muck in and learn new things if required.

So, in short, I am looking for a project partner, with a look toward creating a business together.

Ideally you would be based in the UK, but I can't imagine being in another country would be an impossibility.

If you are at all interested, please get in contact. This would not be a paid position until money can be made from the project.

I'm looking for someone to help me spice up my index-exhibit portfolio. Nothing too fancy, just a couple hours to help it look a little easier on the eyes. Check out the existing site here

HTML / CSS for simple web site

Web site's already designed, I just need someone to code it up. It's one page with a nav bar (all pages will be the same layout). It needs to be standards-compliant.

It is, I believe, a very simple layout:

Top row is logo
Under that is 4-item nav bar
Under that is two column layout for text

That's it. I can't imagine it would take anyone proficient with CSS/HTML more than 90 minutes to pull off (you could probably adapt a site you've already coded).

I'm thinking $50 paypal'd to you when it's done but if you think that's ridiculous, send me a quote after you see the layout and we'll go from there.

If you have links to work you've completed, please send them along with your initial email.

Please DO NOT MeMail about the job. Instead, send an email to ysstog at gmail.

Thanks!

Seeking internet savvy fitness expert

WorkoutBOX is a brand new fitness website providing accessible workouts and exercises for the masses. We have just launched the beta version of the site and plan to add many more features in the coming months.

What makes us different?

WorkoutBOX is not just your average fitness website. We have combined modern web technologies with our extensive fitness knowhow to build a powerful website that makes working out and fitness simple for all.

1.	We have the best looking workouts on the internet. They are simple to understand, yet provide all the information the reader needs.
2.	Each workout contains embedded exercise videos, so users can see exactly how the exercises should be performed.
3.	All workouts and exercises are stored in a custom built database and we have built a special Workout Builder wizard which allows us to add new workouts in minutes. It requires no technical knowledge whatsoever.

How does WorkoutBOX make money?

•	Currently all the content on the site is free and accessible to all. This will soon change when we introduce the WorkoutBOX Pro membership level in late July.
•	With WorkoutBOX Pro users will have to pay a small monthly subscription to access the more advanced workouts on the site. A subscription costs only $3 per month and will unlock all the advanced workouts that are no longer available to the public.

Who is behind WorkoutBOX?

Currently Team WorkoutBOX consists of:
•	Simon Turner - a IT expert and keen fitness enthusiast
•	Travis Steffen – a professional MMA fighter and Olympic weightlifting coach
•	Paul Johnson - a fully qualified personal trainer.

Our progress so far:

1.	Since the site went live in early January our traffic has been doubling each month and we will very soon reach 40,000 monthly uniques.
2.	We are ranked top 3 on Yahoo.com for many search terms including - “Workout Routines”, “Muscle Building Workout”, “Ab Workout”, “Fat Burning Workouts”, “Back Workouts”, “Arm Workout”, “Exercise Routines”. Our Google rankings are climbing by the day…
3.	On top of this we are receiving organic traffic from over 6000 other keywords and have already been featured on CNet.com here.

What are we looking for?

The key to WorkoutBox’s success is our well presented database of workouts and exercises. The larger our site, the more members we will attract and the more profitable we will become. To do this, we need your help…

We’re looking to expand our team and recruit web savvy fitness experts to help enlarge the workout database, offering many more routines and catering for people from literally all backgrounds. The role would include:

•	Creating new workout routines
•	Creating new exercises
•	Helping out in the forum, answering questions and general moderation.
•	Helping out with marketing and promotion

The role would initially require 10 - 15 hours a week but would move into a permanent position once the business establishes itself.

What can we offer you?

•	Initially the position would be voluntary. This allows us to confirm that we are all happy working with each other before we put anything in stone.
•	We would then be happy to negotiate an equity share in the business along with a monthly salary.

So if you are a fitness expert with a flair for the web and all this sounds of interest to you, then please do get in touch. You can email us at jointheteam [at] workoutbox.com

We look forward to hearing from you.

Simon Turner

Contract: Rails developer for simple web app

I'm an individual looking for a Rails developer to implement my vision for a web application with small amounts of AJAX. The spec is written and the XHTML templates are complete. A lot of the Rails infrastructure is already in place, as is the Postgres db the app will be using.

You:

-Have experience doing development in Rails and Postgresql and can show me something you've done.
-Are willing to sign an NDA, review the spec, and give me a realistic estimate and deadline. And then stick to them.
-Respond to most e-mails within 12 hours.

I'm in Toronto, but I don't care where you are as long as you're responsive to e-mail.

Flash/Action Script expert to collaborate on Tower Defence

Hi. I need to build a fairly simple Tower Defence game for a client. I am an illustrator and designer, but not a Flash or action script expert. You, however, are, and are willing to collaborate with me to produce the finished product.

The Game:
Fun, self-contained Flash based Tower Defence game, with a target audience of 8-12 year old children (therefore won't need to be complicated or too fancy). The finished game will be freely accessible to all and hosted on a website for kids, which I am building.

My role:
I can supply game rules/gameplay ideas, guidelines, text, all graphics and all sound effects. Basically all the visible and audible stuff. But I don't currently know how to put all these things together so that they work. I am somewhat flexible with the finer points of gameplay, so am open to suggestions if they make your life easier.

Your role:
You take all the elements that I supply, in whatever format you need, and put them all together into a smooth, workable and fun game.

Timescale:
We need to have the finished game online by 28th April (2009, sadly).

Contract - (X)HTML/CSS required for webapp templates

This is a contract for an individual (me). I require eleven standards-compliant, highly-browser-compatible (X)HTML/CSS templates for a webapp I'm developing. Two of them are rich-interface (although you won't have to do the AJAX-y stuff, just the template code), while the rest are static pages and forms.

Graphic mockups are all done and the spec is written -- you just have to code it.

You:

-Have experience putting together standards-compliant, lightweight (X)HTML and CSS.

-Have a portfolio that shows off what you can do. As a plus, you can show me a UI template you've coded.

-Can stick to a realistic deadline.

-Respond to most e-mails within 12 hours.

-Are willing to sign an NDA (not a non-compete) and look over my materials before giving me an estimate.

-Will tell me if anything in the spec is moronic or surprisingly time-consuming before doing it.

Support Analyst - Enterprise Web Applications

Who are we?
MD+A Consultants is a boutique IT consulting firm based in downtown Toronto. We provide strategic and project management consulting services to the healthcare, public and non-profit sectors. Since 1999, MD+A Consultants has focused on understanding the challenges facing organizations in health, human and social services. Although we're IT experts, our strategies begin with people and their needs. Working together, we've been a key contributor to innovative technology projects that have solved business problems, improved efficiency and given our customers better ways to serve their clientele. We're small, agile, innovative and entrepreneurial, and we look for team members who are independent thinkers and adapt quickly to new challenges.
What we need:
We're looking for an Application Support Analyst with proven skills in customer service and QA, and strong user-level knowledge of web application functionality and development. You don't need to be a programmer or a sysadmin, but you should have a reasonably sophisticated knowledge of what enterprise web applications are and how they're used and administered. You'll be working with our customers and our developers to track down, test, document and resolve any issues with the way our application works and identify opportunities for improvement.
Points to consider:
*	Our clients need help managing and maintaining their custom web applications; you won't be supporting networks, computers, or operating systems.
*	Your focus will be on the end users, especially the administrators using the back end tools associated with the application to manage content, users and reports.
Who are you?
*	You're a fast learner who's prepared to jump in and start making a difference for our clients right away, learning as you go.
*	You're someone with strong active listening skills who can work with frustrated customers to identify root problems and opportunities to improve our applications.
*	You have the analytical skills and business savvy to recognize when a pattern of complaints actually points to an unmet need.
*	You obsess over small details; if something seems strange or wrong, you're driven to keep investigating until you've figured it out.
*	You're comfortable working with “techies”, and have the ability to clearly communicate technical issues, both verbally and in writing, easily shifting between technical and non-technical audiences.
*	You've had experience coordinating projects involving multiple team members.
*	You've got some familiarity and experience with web development tools and techniques (e.g. HTML, PHP and CSS templates).
*	Some experience with application testing would be a great advantage.
Responsibilities:
*	You'll work with our customers to track down and resolve any application issues, and identify opportunities to enhance their experience.
*	You'll document issues and apply your analytical skills to figure out where things are going wrong.
*	You'll communicate the issues clearly to our development team and coordinate their resolution, ensuring that fixes are timely and effective.
*	You'll carry out formal QA testing of application features and fixes for functionality and client acceptance.
*	You'll manage basic content updates, including some simple HTML coding, using a CMS interface.
*	You'll maintain documentation and training resources and help teach our clients how to use the application.
The Final Word:
*	This is a six-month contract with the potential for renewal.
*	Compensation will be commensurate with your responsibilities and experience
*	To apply, please email a resume and cover letter to info@mdaconsultants.ca
*	Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applicants expected, we will only be able to respond to shortlisted candidates.

Web Developer - Flash, PHP, MySQL

This is most likely a 6 month assignment with good chance of becoming permanent. We are a start up fashion ecommerce web company. We have a website built in Drupal, Flash and PHP with a MySQL dbase that allows users to design their own tshirts and then buy their designs.

I am looking for one or two web development specialists who can be the day to day leads on working with me to re-build our existing site on a smaller, simpler and more flexible scale so that we can refine our I/A, branding, messaging and user experience.

First order of business would be to take the code for the main component of our website and re-purpose it to fit in a basic, static html site with a basic database behind it. The core component is a flash tool. I would need one or two people who can look at how the current tool is built and figure out how it works and then figure out how to re-purpose it to our team's specs.

I know this is vague. If you send me your resume and I see that their may be a fit, we can discuss in more detail.
