Job Opening: Newsroom Services Coordinator

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, defending and empowering public-interest journalism, is looking for a full-time Newsroom Services Coordinator.

This role is the first point of contact for news organizations requesting services or support from Freedom of the Press Foundation.

<strong>About our services to news organizations</strong>

SecureDrop is an open source whistleblower submission system used by journalists to communicate with sources. It is currently in use at more than 70 media organizations worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Intercept, and NBC. We lead the development of SecureDrop, and we provide installation help, support and training to many of the news organizations using it.

In addition, we offer broader digital security training services to individuals and groups involved in the media. Our trainers follow an individualized intake process to develop training materials to match the unique needs of the client. We also offer security consulting services to help news organizations protect their sources, their staff, and their work.

<strong>Responsibilities</strong>

As Newsroom Services Coordinator, you will organize FPF’s free and paid services to news organizations. You will have primary responsibility for the client intake process, relationship management, and tier 1 support for SecureDrop. You will work closely with the digital security training team in the coordination of trainings and consulting services, and you will help standardize FPF’s portfolio of services where it makes sense to do so.

This role involves a significant amount of ticket-based work, document management, scheduling, facilitating phone calls, and coordinating with other team members. Over time, it offers the opportunity for advancement towards more technically demanding tasks, with continued mentorship by other team members.

This position is open to remote work within American time zones, or to work in our New York City office.

<strong>Skills and Experience</strong>

Required:

- 2+ years applicable professional experience (e.g., in a project coordination or technical support role)
- Experience working with issue trackers, and ticketing systems
- Impeccable written and in-person communications
- Experience with scheduling and other administrative tasks
- You know your way around the command line, you know what a firewall is, you understand the difference between a client and a server — and you are eager to learn more.

Great to have:

- Experience in a technical support or sales engineering role for a complex technical project
- Network security and troubleshooting experience, including firewall configuration
- Working knowledge of public key cryptography (e.g., PGP, GPG)
- Experience working with journalism/media organizations
- Experience using version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Experience contributing to free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) projects in any capacity

<strong>Working with us</strong>

If you are passionate about supporting news organizations in doing their most sensitive work, we encourage you to get in touch. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with a small team of software developers and digital security trainers while engaging directly with newsrooms around the world. If you’re interested but unsure whether this role is for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out for an informational call.

<strong>If you’d like to be a part of our team, please send a short cover letter and your resume to jobs+services[at]freedom[dot]press by May 29, 2019. Freedom of the Press Foundation is an equal opportunity employer. Non-binary individuals, women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.</strong>

Benefits of the job include a competitive nonprofit salary, health (United Healthcare Select Plus) and dental insurance, 20 days Personal Time Off, 10 paid holidays plus the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, 401(k) program with employer match, and commuter benefits. We are happy to answer any questions about these benefits. We value work-life balance, and we try to foster a kind, inclusive and collaborative culture.

Mac I.T. firm looking for a helping hand

Are you a Mac genius with incredible people skills and crafty troubleshooting abilities? Are you the one your friends turn to for help with their Macs? When you don't know the answer, are you able to admit it (and then figure it out)?

Let's chat! We're a small Mac consultancy catering to art / media / graphic design / film / small business clients throughout New York City (with an emphasis on West Chelsea).

We're looking for a very part-time assistant to take on service calls throughout the city. Perhaps you're a student looking for some extra income, a freelancer with a little extra time on your hands, or already a Mac tech looking to fill some gaps in your schedule with our clients. It's an ideal position for someone with a flexible schedule. This is a 1099 position.

If you think you'd enjoy running around town and meeting lots of crazy creative people with wide-ranging tech issues, send a cover letter and a résumé (PDFs only, please). Let me know about tech experience and your areas of expertise (networking? web design? pro video?), if any. We're a small firm, so what we're really looking for is a Mac-centric generalist (with the ability to grasp new concepts / do the appropriate research quickly and accurately) who can present a friendly, confident face and communicate clearly with our clients, whether their tech issues are tiny or huge.

Nick Burns (your company's computer guy) need not apply.

This job requires both computer savvy and customer communication skills. You will be responsible for updating our systems in response to client requests and to help clients most fully utilize their subscription to our web-based information product. * Technical support experience would be useful but this is not a high volume call center type of environment.
* Logical thinkers with a healthy sense of curiosity and doggedness in dealing with problems are ideal candidates.
* Experience with web applications and some HTML required. If you have a little experience with Unix we’d love to know about it. If you want to write code, you won’t get to do that in this job, sorry.

Our systems have been developed in-house and we will provide training on them but we’re looking for someone who can become a member of our team and take ownership of their work quickly. You will start as an assistant to the existing operations person with a path of growth to becoming the lead person in the department and working independently as soon as possible.

We provide a competitive salary and benefits and a casual working environment. No relocation is offered. You can read MeFi all day so long as our customers are happy and all your work is done. I'm trying to hire someone full-time but could also work with someone who's able to keep a regular part-time schedule. You could probably go to school at night and have this job during the day. Dependability is key.
