LA true crime & offbeat history blog seeks contributors

Gentle reader,

1947project, a Los Angeles based time travel blog dedicated to unearthing forgotten crime stories and peculiar happenings from the city's past, is seeking extraordinary contributors to research and write a blog entry once or twice weekly for one year.

On March 18, 1947project will launch a brand new site that offers a fresh spin on the time travel blog theme. The selected contributors will get a sneak peak at the site in question, to give them a little time to bone up on the material.

Potential contributors should be witty, concise writers and skilled researchers, with a passion for Los Angeles social history and an interest in true crime. We also welcome contributors who can write knowledgably on such subjects as architecture, city planning, entertainment, transportation, business, fringe religion and other topics that have been featured in past 1947project blog entries. Skill using or building digital maps is a big plus. You do not have to live in Los Angeles.

To get an idea of what we do, please visit:
www.1947project.com

There is no pay, but the successful applicant will have the opportunity to promote their other work on the site, be mentioned in press releases, get free seats on occasional Esotouric bus adventures and occupy a central spot on a website that has become a must-read for fans of L.A.'s offbeat past.

To apply for a spot on 1947project, please do the following by March 12:

1) ensure that you can access the ProQuest archives of the historical Los Angeles Times, either through the LA Public Library website (you will need a library card), by using the LAPL in-library computers, or from another source. You can call your local public or university librarian for help. Note that ProQuest access is essential for this project.

2) please submit the following application materials, via the contact form at www.1947project.com:
a) a writing sample of 300-500 words, in which you take the basic facts of Marie Prevost's 1937 death (Google it) and turn it into a 1947project-style blog entry. Imagine you are telling the story to a neighbor who hasn't yet heard what's happened, writing it up in a letter home, or submitting a story to a scandal magazine—whatever tone feels right to you. Feel free to use snappy period slang, make suggestions about what might have taken place, and place the dead woman into historical context.
b) your resume
c) an explanation of why you are interested in being a 1947project blogger and what you feel you will bring to the project.
d) how often can you contribute, one or two posts a week?

We look forward to hearing from you!

Kim Cooper, editrix

Research assistant for MIT Game Industry Project

I am running a project analyzing the game industry at MIT, and I need help identifying the founders and status of all of the companies who have developed PC games. There are 3,800 companies in total, but you don't have to do all of them! I would like help to find out, as best as possible, company founding dates; who founded them; and when and if they went out of business, were sold, or merged with other companies.

I have a bit of grant money available to pay people as Research Assistants on a per-company basis. In all honesty, it isn't a huge amount, but if you are interested in the game industry or business academia, then this could be a useful experience and resume builder as well. Additionally, there would be opportunities, if you want, to interview and interact with some key designers and executives in the game industry, and possibly other useful connections as well.

Junior Media Planner

A small, hip advertising agency with big clients seeks an entry-level person to cut his or her teeth in the art/science of media planning and buying. This is an ideal position for someone who is fresh out of school (or just sick of school), ambitious, media-savvy, and hoping for a lot of responsibility right out of the gate. In this informal, startup-esque environment full of quirky, smart people, you will never feel unnoticed or unappreciated. You'll never want to leave, but if you ever do, you won't have to pad your resume with bullshit. We give real experience here.

LatAm / Emerging Markets Associate Analyst

We are a successful boutique brokerage, focused exclusively on trading equities, convertibles, emerging markets securities, and high yield bonds with hedge funds and other institutional investors.

We are seeking to add an associate to our Emerging Markets research function, which focuses principally (although not exclusively) upon Latin American corporate bonds.

For this position, we have the following specific requirements:

(1) Spanish fluency and native/near-native fluency in English,

(2) one or more (1+) years of experience in Latin American corporate credit,

(3) bachelor's degree; additional credentials welcome.

This position has an initial "target" (but not guaranteed) total compensation range of $65,000 to $85,000, including a bonus and a base salary of $45,000 to $60,000 depending upon experience.

Our associates, if successful, have the opportunity to progress rapidly in responsibilty, rank and compensation, including promotion to senior analyst roles and lateral moves to institutional sales and trading.

This is a refinement of a broader associate-/senior-associate level recruiting launched with an earlier round of ads (on Craigslist and elsewhere); there is no need to reapply if you applied initially.

Interested applicants should submit a resume and writing samples in both English and Spanish.

Study participant: video & cell phone-based media, $125

We are conducting research for a client, investigating people's needs related to videos and other cell phone-based media. We work at IDEO, a highly respected development consultancy, which you can learn more about at www.ideo.com.

If you qualify for the study, we will visit you for 1.5 hours, sometime between 4/23 and 5/2. The visits will be in the greater Boston area, and will be held wherever you usually do the activities that qualify you for the study – probably your home or workplace. We’ll interview you and ask you to show us what you do with video and/or cell phone-based media. For this participation, we will pay you $125.

If you might like to participate, please e-mail participant@ideo.com with replies to the questions below (or, if you’d prefer, you can call Stacey at 617-844-2446).

1. We’re looking for people who use videos, or other media on their cell phones, in interesting ways. Here are some examples (but it’s fine if your interesting use isn’t listed):
•	You often use your cell phone to make and share videos, pictures, and/or other media.
•	You’re a parent who often uses cell phone photos or videos to check on your kids.
•	You’ve recently used different video calling than is available in the U.S. – e.g., cell-phone-based video conference calls, cell-phone dial-in to remote video cameras, etc.
•	You often use video to stay in touch. E.g., you’re married but live away from your spouse, you’re on the road constantly, or you’re a teen who video-calls with friends. (If you’re under 18, please contact us together with a parent.)
•	You often post your videos to your blog or other websites, send them to people you know, and watch videos that you get from the web.
•	You often take and provide video in your line of work. E.g., you take videos of real estate, you’re a video-dating matchmaker, or you have a movie-making job.
•	You have a video studio, or you often make movies and digitally edit them.
What do you do with video and/or cell phones that makes you a good candidate? Please explain in detail.

2. Phone number(s) where we can reach you?

When you respond, Stacey may ask you some more qualifying questions, and will determine whether to arrange a visit with you. Feel free to mention you saw the listing here. (Please note, I'm not a recruiter. I'm the IDEO employee who is conducting the study.) Thanks very much!
