We've gotten along now for a few years with some great developers, but no one with structured experience who can bring our architecture and coding methodologies to the next level. * Apache and mod_rewrite experience

Budding, all-round web guy and interested party

Hi, this isn't so much a job opportunity, more of an opportunity for someone who has the creative chops, and the desire to at least explore the possibility of a business venture. I have what I believe is a good embryonic idea to create a dating site that doesn't make the user feel like a commodity, taking a couple of cues from the metafilter community model.

But my experience of creating websites is pretty limited to HTML and some graphic design, and not much else. I really don't know what programming languages and such are required these days, and want someone who knows their stuff.

What I'm looking for is someone who wants a project to work on in their spare time. Someone to develop the back, and front-end of this kind of community website. I intend to provide creative input, ideas, graphics and such, and am also happy to muck in and learn new things if required.

So, in short, I am looking for a project partner, with a look toward creating a business together.

Ideally you would be based in the UK, but I can't imagine being in another country would be an impossibility.

If you are at all interested, please get in contact. This would not be a paid position until money can be made from the project.

Java web developer - medium-term contract

I develop and maintain a few J2EE projects, and am in need an extra pair of hands to help make a dent in an ever-growing task list. You'll be joining a small team of good people.

This is a contract position, for 20-40 hours/week, depending on your availability. The initial contract will be for three months, with a very healthy possibility of extension. Ideally you'd be available to start as soon as possible.

You'll need to have:

- Experience with Java EE servlet-based sites. We use a J2EE platform with a custom MVC framework.
- Serious MySQL chops.
- A creative streak. You may be asked to fill in the last blanks on specs.
- The ability to multi-task. You'll likely juggle a few different tasks at a time, across projects.
- A willingness to be agile and nimble as priorities shift between projects and tasks.
- Great communication skills, both written and oral.

It would be awesome if you are:

- comfortable working with HTML,
- experienced with the Apache Velocity template engine,
- well-versed in the config and setup of the Tomcat and Resin app servers.

If this sounds like you, please drop me a note telling me a bit about yourself, along with a portfolio and/or CV, and your rates.

Ideally you're located in the GTA, but we could be convinced otherwise if you're awesome enough. We mostly work remotely, with the occasional meetup, but office space with the team could be arranged if you require it.

Web Marketing Guy with a lil' PHP experience.

Basically- You're taking over my job. When I entered this position it was strictly online marketing- Yakking with bloggers, running online contests, tending to the Facebook Page, dreaming up new ways to connect with people online, sending out the monthly newsletter etc etc.

My yen to get things done combined with my Comp Sci 102 knowledge led me to create a series of custom apps that allow us to be more flexible and get things done more quickly. What this means is that it's no longer strictly a marketing gig- It's like 1/2 web development, 1/2 marketing.

So here's what you'd need to get on board:

-PHP 102 skillz. I did a lot of documentation, but if a problem pops up you need to have that core understanding of programming languages to fix it.

-HTML/CSS skillz. We have a graphic designer, but you'll need to code. Our e-commerce system is VERY flexible, which means it also breaks and bends in all kinds of ways. Being able to diagnose and fix the problem is very important.

-MySQL 101 skillz. Those PHP apps? They interact with SQL. A lot. Know your UPDATES and INSERTS and you'll be fine.

-Imagination. We don't do ads. Which means that we need to get the word out somehow. Wanna have a blogger lunch at our restaurant? Great. Make it happen. Have a cool idea for a Flash recipe book? We sort of hate Flash, but make it cool and we can bear it.

We are a small gourmet food company with big growth in the last 2-3 years and very healthy forecast for the year ahead. It also means you get free food at events, as well as take home from our own brands.

You don't have to be a programming whiz, but you do need a healthy spirit of "I can do it" or "I can find out how to do it", patience and hard work. Apply using the e-mail address below for more details.

Looking for full-time, but willing to consider part-time/freelance for the interim. NYC preferred.

Contract: Rails developer for simple web app

I know, it's always "simple" until you get started . . .

I'm an individual looking for a Rails developer to implement my vision for a web application with small amounts of AJAX. The spec is written and the XHTML templates are complete. A lot of the Rails infrastructure is already in place, as is the Postgres db the app will be using.

You'll be doing the part of the application that provides the core end-user experience; all user authentication, billing, administrative back-end, etc., is being done separately.

You:

-Have experience doing development in Rails and Postgresql and can show me something you've done.
-Are willing to sign an NDA, review the spec, and give me a realistic estimate and deadline. And then stick to them.
-Respond to most e-mails within 12 hours.

I'm in Toronto, but I don't care where you are as long as you're responsive to e-mail.

Flash/Action Script expert to collaborate on Tower Defence

Hi. I need to build a fairly simple Tower Defence game for a client. I am an illustrator and designer, but not a Flash or action script expert. You, however, are, and are willing to collaborate with me to produce the finished product.

<strong>The Game:</strong>
Fun, self-contained Flash based Tower Defence game, with a target audience of 8-12 year old children (therefore won't need to be complicated or too fancy). The finished game will be freely accessible to all and hosted on a website for kids, which I am building.

<strong>My role:</strong>
I can supply game rules/gameplay ideas, guidelines, text, all graphics and all sound effects. Basically all the visible and audible stuff. But I don't currently know how to put all these things together so that they work. I am somewhat flexible with the finer points of gameplay, so am open to suggestions if they make your life easier.

<strong>Your role:</strong>
You take all the elements that I supply, in whatever format you need, and put them all together into a smooth, workable and fun game.

<strong>Timescale:</strong>
We need to have the finished game online by 28th April (2009, sadly).

Wordpress Plugin

I'd like to be able to sell access to sections of a Wordpress site on a per-category basis.

For example, user A might purchase access to category 3, user B might purchase access to categories 2 and 5, and so forth. Some categories would be viewable to everyone.

Posts in these restricted categories should also have a way of having files associated with them that are served up only when the user is logged in and has the appropriate permissions.

I'd love to be able to create bundles (packages of categories for a discount, for example). I'd also like for purchase &amp; account creation to be all on one screen and accomplished at the same time.

I have a small budget, but the project it's for is neat enough that you might not mind the check isn't so huge (especially if you have some code you can reuse to limit your time investment).

Mail me if you're interested and want more details, or if I need a reality check and my budget is off by at least a decimal point.

Software Developer -- Challenging projects, brilliant coworkers

Rentrak Corporation is always looking for talented developers to add to our team in beautiful Portland, Oregon.

You're probably used to being the smartest developer on your team (but are too humble to admit it), and are looking for a place where you can work alongside talented peers building great software for interesting projects. At Rentrak, we're a small enough company that you can make a big difference, but we're big enough to ensure your paycheck never bounces.

Here are just a few things Rentrak programmers have done recently:
    * Wrote customized extensions to Open Source tools, to process queries hundreds of times faster than commercial RDBMSs
    * Built a goal-seeking system to dynamically generate optimal SQL queries for end-user data requests
    * Celebrated our 3 billionth transaction processed
    * Implemented software to categorize and predict consumer behavior based on television viewing history
    * Created systems that predict movie sales in theaters, retail stores and video rental locations
    * Gave a Tech Talk to Google about our brilliant database technology

Our teams are relatively small (three to six people), and we have a development environment influenced by XP. We have a nice open work area so our developers can share their brilliant ideas, learn from each other, expand our extensive custom libraries and work together to solve tough problems. We keep our source code base well factored and filled with unit tests.

We work with a stunningly large amount of data, and everyone here does an amazing job of turning it into something manageable. We have a very high hiring bar, and we feel that all the people who work here could easily get a job at any of the major tech companies. Our management understands this and works hard to make sure our developers are happy and productive.

We're looking for ridiculously smart developers to help us reinvent our industries. Experience with functional or dynamic object-oriented development experience is great (e.g., Lisp, Smalltalk, Scheme, Ocaml, SML, Haskell, Ruby, Unlambda, C++/STL/Boost, or advanced use of Python or Perl). RDBMS experience is also helpful, especially with terabyte-plus databases.

Rentrak's developers work with their teammates on all aspects of the development process: requirements gathering, system design, database design and tuning and, of course, lots of unit tests and coding.

Business/Data Analyst

Rapidly-growing and profitable internet company with oodles of high-quality data to mine seeks a business/data analyst who's not afraid to get her or his hands dirty turning raw data into insightful and business-intelligible reports. And the data is indeed very raw: this job will involve coding sql, python, bash shell scripts, perl, etc. If the idea of querying Oracle directly via command-line sql scares you away, this job isn't for you. On the other hand, if you've got sound business sense but are still geeky enough to get a thrill from coding, then this may be just the right spot for you.

Benefits include full health/dental/vision, stock options, a fun and engaged culture, friendly coworkers, a chance to make a real and personal impact on the company's strategy, free catered lunches every day and free 24/7 snacks galore, an opportunity to work with cutting-edge database and data mining technologies, and free Caltrain passes and/or private shuttle to and from San Francisco.

No need to apply with a resume right now -- please send a brief description of why this job sounds interesting to you and/or any questions you might have.

Thanks!
