Web Developer (Perl, PHP, MySQL, client-side)

After spending eight years single-handedly building and maintaining <a href="http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/">Publishers Marketplace</a>, a database-driven site for publishing professionals, I'm now looking for someone to help.

This is a LAMP site, where "P" is largely Perl, with some PHP thrown in. A qualified applicant would be proficient in both Ps, would be comfortable working with a MySQL database, and would have lots of experience with client-side programming. Above all, we're looking for someone who is trustworthy and discreet.

This position is part time, probably about 5 to 10 hours a week after a training period, but I'm hoping that it will grow into something bigger.

For details and application instructions, please consult <a href="http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/cgi-bin/displayJob.pl?job_no=3898">the full job posting</a> on the Publishers Lunch Job Board.

Senior PHP Developer for web dev firm

We (<a href="http://www.synapsestudios.com/jobs/php_guru/">Synapse Studios</a>) need a senior PHP developer with PHP 5/OO experience who can step in and help guide the growth we're expecting in the near-term. We've gotten along now for a few years with some great developers, but no one with structured experience who can bring our architecture and coding methodologies to the next level. That's who we're looking for.

We're also looking for someone that knows how to write clean and efficient PHP5 object oriented code at the enterprise level. Here is a list of our "absolutely-must-have" requirements:

* PHP 5 - object oriented experience
* SQL knowledge: basic and advanced (i.e. stored procedures, views, triggers, etc)
* HTML (can code by hand or in sleep)
* Subversion or other version control systems
* Some HTTP experience (you should know the difference between GET versus POST, what a 404 is versus a 200, 301 redirect, etc)
* Regular expressions (at least able to understand them even if they give you horrible, horrible nightmares)
* Model-View-Controller (MVC) experience (via frameworks such as Kohana, Zend, Cake, or Symfony for example)
* AJAX by way of jQuery, YUI or any other popular libraries
* Knowledge of design patterns
* Apache and mod_rewrite experience
* Linux system administration skills
* Extensive Javascript and CSS knowledge
* Experience with at least one other language (C, Perl, Java, Python, Ruby)
* Using and writing APIs

We need someone on site in Tempe, Arizona, but we're open to helping people relocate.

We're a younger group of motivated web developers and our company is growing rapidly. We keep things fun and interesting, have great office space in the downtown district, and do our best to give back to our community. Find more out about us at our site.

This is your first test, so don't screw it up...
To apply, send ALL of the following to jobs at synapsestudios dot com:

1. Your resume
2. Some samples showing off what you can do
3. Include the job title in the subject line of the email

Budding, all-round web guy and interested party

Hi, this isn't so much a job opportunity, more of an opportunity for someone who has the creative chops, and the desire to at least explore the possibility of a business venture. I have what I believe is a good embryonic idea to create a dating site that doesn't make the user feel like a commodity, taking a couple of cues from the metafilter community model.

But my experience of creating websites is pretty limited to HTML and some graphic design, and not much else. I really don't know what programming languages and such are required these days, and want someone who knows their stuff.

What I'm looking for is someone who wants a project to work on in their spare time. Someone to develop the back, and front-end of this kind of community website. I intend to provide creative input, ideas, graphics and such, and am also happy to muck in and learn new things if required.

So, in short, I am looking for a project partner, with a look toward creating a business together.

Ideally you would be based in the UK, but I can't imagine being in another country would be an impossibility.

If you are at all interested, please get in contact. This would not be a paid position until money can be made from the project.

Web Marketing Guy with a lil' PHP experience.

Basically- You're taking over my job. When I entered this position it was strictly online marketing- Yakking with bloggers, running online contests, tending to the Facebook Page, dreaming up new ways to connect with people online, sending out the monthly newsletter etc etc.

My yen to get things done combined with my Comp Sci 102 knowledge led me to create a series of custom apps that allow us to be more flexible and get things done more quickly. What this means is that it's no longer strictly a marketing gig- It's like 1/2 web development, 1/2 marketing.

So here's what you'd need to get on board:

-PHP 102 skillz. I did a lot of documentation, but if a problem pops up you need to have that core understanding of programming languages to fix it.

-HTML/CSS skillz. We have a graphic designer, but you'll need to code. Our e-commerce system is VERY flexible, which means it also breaks and bends in all kinds of ways. Being able to diagnose and fix the problem is very important.

-MySQL 101 skillz. Those PHP apps? They interact with SQL. A lot. Know your UPDATES and INSERTS and you'll be fine.

-Imagination. We don't do ads. Which means that we need to get the word out somehow. Wanna have a blogger lunch at our restaurant? Great. Make it happen. Have a cool idea for a Flash recipe book? We sort of hate Flash, but make it cool and we can bear it.

We are a small gourmet food company with big growth in the last 2-3 years and very healthy forecast for the year ahead. It also means you get free food at events, as well as take home from our own brands.

You don't have to be a programming whiz, but you do need a healthy spirit of "I can do it" or "I can find out how to do it", patience and hard work. Apply using the e-mail address below for more details.

Looking for full-time, but willing to consider part-time/freelance for the interim. NYC preferred.

(Re)design a community site by yesterday

Needed: PHP/CSS/JavaScript/MySQL tinkerer to turn some off-the-shelf WordPress applications into a unified thing of beauty. Immediately.

We're launching a web site for people to discuss and analyze some legal documents that have been in the news. No, not the AIG bonuses, but something that dense and that ought to be of the same public interest. There are a few people who understand how things fit together, and we want to turn them into a real community. The new site will bring them all together in one place on the web, have them share knowledge, mark up the legal documents with close commentary, and make it all explicable to the general public.

We're building the site around WordPress plugins. CommentPress lets users have threaded discussions about individual paragraphs within a post. bbPress supplies us with discussion forums. We'll also have some blogs and static pages. We'd like a wiki. And, oh yeah, the site needs to launch within a couple of weeks.

Right now, things are functional . . . but they also <i>feel</i> functional, rather than welcoming. There are unwanted scrollbars and ungainly, misshapen text-entry fields. The CommentPress and bbPress sections look nothing like each other. The different login interfaces aren't all integrated. You get the picture. There are a bunch of little things that are getting in the way of usability, and the site has zero personality. We've got a graphic designer working on a logo and basic branding, but we also need someone to do the web monkeying.

Could that someone be you? It might well be if you . . .
<ul>
<li>. . .can start <i>now</i>. Not next week now. Now now.</li>
<li>. . . care about access to information, openness, and fixing copyright law.</li>
<li>. . . wouldn't even think about using Flash.</li>
</ul>

If interested, get in touch and I'll point you at the rough prototype.

This is most likely a 6 month assignment with good chance of becoming permanent. We are a start up fashion ecommerce web company. We have a website built in Drupal, Flash and PHP with a MySQL dbase that allows users to design their own tshirts and then buy their designs.

I am looking for one or two web development specialists who can be the day to day leads on working with me to re-build our existing site on a smaller, simpler and more flexible scale so that we can refine our I/A, branding, messaging and user experience.

First order of business would be to take the code for the main component of our website and re-purpose it to fit in a basic, static html site with a basic database behind it. The core component is a flash tool. I would need one or two people who can look at how the current tool is built and figure out how it works and then figure out how to re-purpose it to our team's specs.

I know this is vague. If you send me your resume and I see that their may be a fit, we can discuss in more detail.

Wordpress Plugin

I'd like to be able to sell access to sections of a Wordpress site on a per-category basis.

For example, user A might purchase access to category 3, user B might purchase access to categories 2 and 5, and so forth. Some categories would be viewable to everyone.

Posts in these restricted categories should also have a way of having files associated with them that are served up only when the user is logged in and has the appropriate permissions.

I'd love to be able to create bundles (packages of categories for a discount, for example). I'd also like for purchase &amp; account creation to be all on one screen and accomplished at the same time.

I have a small budget, but the project it's for is neat enough that you might not mind the check isn't so huge (especially if you have some code you can reuse to limit your time investment).

Mail me if you're interested and want more details, or if I need a reality check and my budget is off by at least a decimal point.

PHP Programmer

I need a browser-based FTP upload page created. I think it will be fairly simple: it should have the option to upload more than one file at a time, a place to enter notes about what's being uploaded, and an automatic email notification. It is upload only -- no download. It should be as user-friendly as possible. Slick, AJAX-y magic is a plus. Maybe it doesn't need to be PHP, but it does need to run on a LAMP server. Interested? I'm in Atlanta, but you can be anywhere.

One off - car reservation webapp/appengine

Disclaimer: This job is posted on rentacoder, too, but I want it to be open to mefites also. AskMefi is where I first <a href="http://ask.metafilter.com/105283/Asset-booking-for-cars">asked about this</a>.

A web app to facilitate the reservation of a small organisation's vehicles. What is needed is a PHP/Perl/Appengine/Ruby/Python/MySQL app which would allow somebody to input their date, time and number of passengers and be able to book a vehicle from the available suggestions the system returns them. The system does not go so far as to check that the vehicle left the garage, nor does it check that the vehicle is returned on time. It is simply assumed that this happens.
There is no need for any money to be involved.

There seems to be some misunderstandings about what this system should do. If you just think about it as an intelligent whiteboard, you should understand it pretty well.

There should also be a facility to report problems with the vehicles. We currently use a whiteboard but would prefer to use a digital system.
It is possible to see what problems are already registered to a car when you're booking it. For example "mirror missing".

Administrator register new users manually.
Administrators should be able to ban and reactivate users.
Administrators should be able to put out of use and reactivate cars. Receives a list of all current and future bookings when he does this.
Users can book cars and modify their own bookings (choose which booking to modify from a personalised list).
Administrators can modify ALL bookings.
By all means use AJAX and or a Javascript library (jQuery for example) of your choice. Make it look as pretty as you can but the important thing is that the webapp is CLEVER, logical, and thinks things through. If you can get that right, then good design may well get you a bonus!

Further clarification:
A vehicle can be booked many times in the same day (though it's typically about five times). So long as there is no overlapping, there is no limit on how much the vehicle can be used. A booking on our current whiteboard look like this:
1200-1450 Fred Manchester

The user should have to confirm that they have permission before they are allowed to book a car for more than 24 hours. They can do this on trust with no administrator approval required. See screenshot for how I would like this implemented. Cars can be booked again immediately after the last booking but I would suggest that it would be a good idea that the system itself adds in five minutes of 'safety buffer' after each booking. So that if someone requests a car for 1520, but the car isn't due back until 1520, the bookee is told that the car is available from 1525.

There will be no self registration. The Administrator adds all users using a private interface. The administrator also modifies and adds the vehicles.

I don't have a database ready. It needs to be designed to fit in with the system created.

There is NO MONEY involved. That means no user budgets. There are about 15 cars altogether, and people can see from the picture if it's a van of a personal vehicle. And the system will only show them cars with enough seats for how many passengers they want to take and if it's allowed based on the type of journey they want to make (some cars are for company business only). This is a property set by the administrator on the "edit vehicle" page. In addition the system should only show cars as available to a user if they have a driving licence to drive the car. If, however, they are making a booking for another registered user (selected from a list), then the system shows the cars available to THAT user's licence. i.e. the person who will actually be making the journey.

There should also be a page to show all current and future bookings. Another page to show all PAST bookings (in case someone wants to know who had what car when, for whatever reason).

Car Notes page - Users or Administrators can come here and add notes to the car (Damage etc). Notes are approved by the administrator before they are added to the car. Before this they are held in a queue. This is to prevent duplicates and to afford the administrator the opportunity to reprash the problem.

-The system needs to THINK. If a booking needs to be extend by someone who realises he won't make it home in time, and wants to legitimise this need, the system can by all means provide the opportunity to extend the booking, IF it doesn't result in overlap with somebody else's booking.

-There needs to be the ability for a registered user who doesn't themself have a driving licence or a driving licence in a higher category to be able to reserve a car/minibus for somebody who DOES. This person would be selected via a list and their name would show as the driver, NOT the user who made the booking. Ideally the system would check first that person was available at that time and not already booked to another car at the same time. But I realise I'm adding a perhaps unnecessary layer of complication here.

-A touch screen interface would be useful...possibily. I am not sure.
There is no checking to see if the car is returned. It is simply assumed that the car has been returned. Everything (I guess) in the system work on the assumption that people return cars on time UNLESS they use the 'extend' facility to extend the booking. And as mentioned, that is only allowed if it doesn't intefere with the next person's booking.

Be sure to see my mockups for a simplified indication of how things could work.

A basic design IS fine! But if you can use AJAX/jQuery/etc - you may well get a bonus.
