Executive Director, StopBadware

Overview

StopBadware is a nonprofit anti-malware organization based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our work educates people and protects them and their organizations from becoming victims of viruses, spyware, scareware, and other badware. Our mission is to make the web safer through the prevention, mitigation, and remediation of badware websites.

StopBadware started as a project of the renowned Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. In 2010, it spun off as an independent nonprofit organization. Since then, it has grown its corporate partner base and launched new initiatives, including the Ads Integrity Alliance and a badware URL data sharing program.

Our original executive director will be leaving in early 2013 (on good terms!), so the Board of Directors is seeking a visionary leader who will build upon StopBadware’s success to date and strengthen the organization’s financial sustainability. We're looking for someone who can take the reins and use our network of Partners, Directors, staff, and industry contacts to effect real, measurable, positive change in the security world. We're looking for someone who knows the security industry and how it's evolved, and who wants to immerse him or herself in the problems users and companies are facing every day.

Responsibilities

As StopBadware’s chief executive, the Executive Director will have primary responsibility for strategic leadership, organizational management, and fundraising and external relations.

Strategic Leadership

Work with the Board of Directors to develop a multi-year strategic plan

Refine metrics and other means of evaluating the organization’s success in carrying out its mission and delivering its programs and services

Seek and develop new initiatives and revenue sources

Serve as the Executive Committee chair of the Ads Integrity Alliance

Organizational Management

Supervise the organization’s staff (currently three full-time, one part-time, one intern): establish goals, communicate priorities, review performance, provide professional development opportunities

Manage key projects, such as the implementation of the new data-sharing program

Create and manage the organization’s budget; facilitate annual external audits

Fundraising & External Relations

Establish relationships with key figures within companies, strategically aligned nonprofits and trade associations, and government

Identify and solicit potential StopBadware Partners and Ads Integrity Alliance members

Represent the organization at conferences, in multi-stakeholder groups, and in the press as a spokesperson and subject matter expert

Engage Partners and Ads Integrity Alliance members in collaborating on, and contributing to, the achievement of StopBadware’s mission

Requirements

Demonstrated success leading an organization

Subject matter expertise in one or more areas of information security; specific expertise in (anti-)malware preferred

Experience with public speaking and/or public relations

Fundraising, sales, and/or marketing experience a plus

Strong personal commitment to StopBadware’s mission and collaborative approach

Longtime Mefite here. Looking to hire a few people to help with our upcoming Free Tax Campaign. I know this isn't the typical developer job that normally gets posted on this board but thought some people might be interested!

Position Overview:
Site Managers provide coordination, organization and supervision for operation of one free tax preparation site in King County. Managers must provide strong customer service to clients coming into sites, ensure quality in the returns filed, and answer tax-related questions that volunteers may have.

Prior experience in tax law is not required. United Way of King County will provide training which will include advanced tax certification.

We are hiring for multiple positions in locations throughout King County, with hours ranging from 15 -- 40 hours a week during the tax season (site hours & locations available on application website). The position is seasonal, with trainings in November to January and tax sites open from January 15th to April 15th.

Program:
United Way of King County's Free Tax Preparation Campaign helps low income families increase their economic stability by connecting them with free tax preparation services, access to public benefits, and asset building opportunities. In 2012, 650 volunteers prepared 14,400 tax returns, returning clients $20.7 million in tax refunds to the community. The Free Tax Preparation Campaign will offer services at 17 sites throughout King County in 2013. Each site will be staffed by volunteers and a paid Site Manager.

Responsibilities:

Oversee preparation of tax returns and confirm all returns are correct.

Ensure smooth operation of the free tax preparation site.

Provide excellent support to the volunteers, answering any questions they may have.

Provide excellent customer service to clients coming into the site, resolving any issues they may have and making sure they receive all the services they are eligible for.

Troubleshoot technology issues such as printer installation or minor laptop malfunctions.

Submit required statistical reports to Tax Campaign staff each week during tax season.

Qualifications:

Passion for helping low-income families and individuals build assets.

Strong site and volunteer management skills

Organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to deal with the clients in a helpful and supportive manner.

Experience with individual tax returns OR the ability to learn tax law.

Ability to speak a second language in addition to English is helpful, but not required.

Time Commitment:
This position is seasonal. Site Managers are hired from November to April. Specifically:

15-40 hours per week during tax season (January 15th to April 15th), for site operating hours and transmission of tax returns. The exact time required depends on specific hours of operation, size of the site, and volume of customer traffic. Some sites are open only during evenings and weekends.

Site Manager training and other requirements:

Independently complete IRS online tax law training and certification tests.

Participate in site manager training on Nov. 10th, 17th, Dec. 1st, from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and Jan. 7th, from 6 PM to 8 PM.

Nonprofit Web Software Development

I work with an author-related convention based in Boston. We need the program management aspect of the site to be revamped. It's your basic event management system, tracking users, panels, tracks, and so forth, with two significant exceptions:

1) No money is processed through it. eCommerce is not required at all.

2) When an admin schedules panels, they need to see recommendations made by the software based on panelist input. For example, "I want to watch this panel (so don't put me on it)", or "I don't want to work with that panelist".

I would be entirely fine with someone taking something that exists and modifying it. The issue is not "We need something that's exclusively ours", it's that our software as it stands sucks a whole lot. I'm smart with testing and minor scripting, but I don't have the mindset for a project of this scope, which is why I'm ISO quotes.

We are a nonprofit, which is why the budget is as low as it is.

Thank you!

Focus on Impact is a new (VERY new) online resource dedicated to getting current information out to nonprofits as well as young development professionals interested in leadership. We want fact-based op-ed articles on every facet of nonprofit work: operations, development, networking, innovative techniques, social entrepreneurship, etc. We can't pay YET, but ideally (and for folks who are interested in long-term freelance work) we'd like to offer paid positions. You can write from anywhere, about any nonprofit topic you're interested in.

If you're looking for some freelance experience, nonprofit experience, or even resume padding, send an e-mail to info@focusonimpact.org.

Overview
The New Organizing Institute (NOI) is looking for full and part-time summer interns to help change how candidates and voters view local elections. Interns will work closely with NOI’s Data and Technology team in transforming the way political data is made available in America.

Specifically, interns will be working to gather and standardize currently scattered information regarding local and state elections, helping create a tool that will increase participation in local government and political engagement in communities. If you enjoy turning chaos into order and making a real difference in the political landscape, this is the internship for you.

All college students with an interest in the mechanics of American elections – regardless of level or major – are encouraged to apply. The position is unpaid, but course credit may be earned and the internship may be extended beyond the summer for the right candidate.

Job Responsibilities
The Election Information Research Interns will be responsible for the following:

•	Assisting the Election Information team in gathering, entering and formatting data from state, county, and municipal sources
•	Helping organize research results to make information and sources easy to understand, both within NOI and externally
•	Working with the Election Information team in researching and interpreting relevant state election laws
•	Maintaining election information databases to reflect updated information and new legislation
•	Assisting other members of the Data & Technology team as necessary

Qualifications
NOI seeks interns who are meticulously detail-oriented, able to think critically about data, and understand the precision demanded by the research process. Interns will have:
•	Some research experience, either extracurricular or through class-work
•	Basic familiarity with Microsoft Excel
•	Interest in American Politics and elections
•	Excellent writing skills, both formal and informal

To Apply:
If you are interested in an internship with NOI, please email us at jobs@neworganizing.com with Summer Internship as the subject line. Be sure to include a brief introduction, a resume and schedule of availability this summer.

About NOI
NOI is a progressive non-profit that works to build the practice of Engagement Organizing and support leaders who are great at it. We provide trainings, community support, actionable research and revolutionary tools for progressive organizers. Here’s what our staff says about our values and workplace:
•	“ NOI welcomes and values people (and their stories, contributions, personal lives) more than any other organization I’ve worked with.”
•	“I love that we focus on long term capacity building rather than purely short term fights.”
•	“I love being part of a team of ‘finishers’ – people who, once they start something, will see it through.”
•	“There is a clear appreciation not just for the accomplishment, but for the people who made it possible.”

Software Developer (Python)

(posting for my organization)

Participatory Culture Foundation, which creates Miro, Universal Subtitles, and more, is hiring. Our staff lives around the United States and the world.

We are a non-profit organization with a team that rivals the talent and quality of any for-profit software company in the world. Our software is used by millions of people every month. Are you doing amazing work for a company that you don't really believe in? Quit your job and work for us. Seriously.

We're looking for an outstanding programmer who can work independently, communicate well, and step back from the code to contemplate improvements to program architecture or our development process. This is a full-time position working on Miro related projects. We are particularly interested in, but are not limiting our search to developers with GTK/GStreamer experience or Windows desktop development experience.

Miro presents an exciting real world challenge: creating cross platform desktop software that interacts with a heterogeneous set of third party libraries and provides an easy to use interface on each platform. We build on existing free peer-to-peer and media libraries where we can.

Miro is mostly written in Python, so solid understanding of Python or a similar dynamic language is a must. A solid understanding of C and C++ is also a requirement. Above all, we are looking for applicants who are very smart, agile, and believe in our mission.

TO APPLY: Send a short note about why you're interested in working with us along with a resume to jobs[at]pculture.org. We are hoping to hire soon, so please apply promptly if you are interested in the position.

We also encourage applicants to consider fixing a couple Miro bugs and submitting the patches so that we can see your work and your ability to work on our codebase. A good place to start is the 'bitesized' bug list on the CommunityProjects page.

I work for a small nonprofit based in NYC that works on a national level with college students around the country. A significant way that we interact with and provide them resources is through our written materials, which we currently design ourselves. We would love for find someone who would be willing to volunteer for us to spruce up our work. I'd rather not go into too much detail here but would love to speak with you individually about how we could work together. It's for a fantastic cause and, speaking as someone who used to dabble in design but now has no time to do it, this would definitely be a few fun mini-projects to sink your teeth into that could add to your portfolio.

The real job posting is below.

TechSoup is a nonprofit that serves as a free IT department for the nonprofit sector. Most people in the nonprofit world know about us for our software donation program, but we do a lot more than that.

What we need for this position is someone with good, professional writing experience, who also has a reasonably high degree of tech expertise (though not necessarily education). Having professional experience in the nonprofit world is also a huge plus.

Please apply at the address below, but also send me a Mefimail and let me know you're applying. I won't lie about you if I don't know you, but I will make sure that your resume gets into the right hands.

TechSoup Global is looking for a creative, technically-minded analyst and writer to create content as part of the Content team, which works to provide nonprofits and libraries with technology information, tools, and support they need to accomplish their missions.

The Technology Analyst will work with the Senior Content Manager, the Lead Technology Analyst, and other members of the team to develop and maintain content for a nonprofit audience; manage our internal computer lab; research and test technology solutions; and develop general content for the TechSoup Web site and TechSoup for Libraries.

We’re seeking someone with hands-on technical experience and the ability to write clearly and in an engaging tone about technology subjects for audiences of varying levels of technology expertise. You should have an enthusiasm for staying on top of a rapidly changing field, an aptitude for writing about technology, and a desire to enhance the capacity of nonprofits and public libraries.
About this Position

As the Technology Analyst, you will be responsible for the following:

1. Creating Content

You will develop content — technology standards and best practices, articles, case studies, blog postings, and user support guides, or technology planning worksheets — for products available through TechSoup, as well as for online trainings for nonprofit and library audiences.

2. Providing Subject-Matter Expertise and In-depth Research

You'll be engaged in forecasting & serious research, coming up with the questions that engage our audience and determine user needs. You will develop and maintain a sound understanding of the technology issues affecting our audience. You will need to bring your expertise in expressing purposeful solutions for nonprofits.

Our audience spans a broad spectrum of IT knowledge, from beginner IT staff to CIOs, and you'll know how to address a variety of users. In addition, you'll help TechSoup’s various departments by using your sound grasp of technology to review content, make suggestions, vet proposals, and provide ideas.

You will need to be able to delve into varied technology areas and provide sound analysis and good summaries of a variety of technology-related topics, both on your own and in collaboration with others. You will also need to be able to focus on topics that are not your primary area of expertise or interest and meet deadlines for researching and producing content. This role requires good research and analysis skills. Even more importantly, it requires the flexibility and communication skills to ensure you provide internal clients with information that best serves their needs and shifting timelines. This is also an opportunity to provide your own ideas on how technology can increase the capacity of the nonprofit organizations.

3. Maintaining TechSoup’s Computer Lab

About TechSoup Global

TechSoup Global is a nonprofit organization that has been successful in creating a suite of high impact services that facilitate corporate philanthropy and benefit community service organizations in a financially sustainable model. For more than two decades, our mission has been to work toward the day when every community service organization on the planet has access to the technology resources and information they need to achieve their own missions. Founded in 1987, we currently have more than 170 staff members and an annual budget of about $23 million. TechSoup Global helps other nonprofits better serve their missions by acquiring and using technology, implementing web and social networking, and receiving grant funding and product donations.

Working with capacity-building partners across the world, TechSoup Global is actively expanding our program outside the US. We establish partnerships with in-country NGOs to implement our highly effective product donation program, while adapting to local business practices, laws, and cultural imperatives. In the process, we’re building a global network of partners all focused on empowering NGOs through the effective use of technology. We’re in 22 countries to date and adding more each month.

Through our TechSoup Stock website, nonprofits find a broad range of software donated by leading tech companies such as Microsoft, Cisco, Symantec, Intuit, and Adobe, along with content and community resources tailored specifically for a nonprofit audience. To date we have enabled over $1 billion in technology donations world wide.

Based upon the strength of our global network, our expertise in building scalable web systems, our history of working both with donors and with recipient NGOs, and our experience building one of the fastest growing sustainable social enterprises, TechSoup Global was recently selected to build a new service for international philanthropy. Backed by major foundations and key philanthropy sector partners, this new service will create a global database of nonprofits and NGOs, making it easier and less costly for international grantmakers to provide cash grants to social benefit organizations in countries outside the U.S.

TechSoup Global is dedicated to creating and supporting an environment of openness, trust, and fun where people's differences are valued and respected, and where people of diverse backgrounds participate fully in our organization. We believe that the diverse cultures and perspectives of our staff will help us better serve our clients. TechSoup Global is an equal opportunity agency and will not allow discrimination based upon race, color, creed, religion, sex, marital status, domestic partner status, ancestry, national origin, weight, height, physical or mental handicap, pregnancy, medical condition, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship, veteran status, AIDS/HIV status, age, or socioeconomic background.

About TechSoup Global:

TechSoup Global is an equal opportunity agency and will not allow discrimination based upon ethnicity, race, color, citizenship, creed, religion, size, weight, height, ancestry, national origin, age, sex, gender, gender identity, pregnancy or childbirth, marital status, domestic partner status, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, physical or mental handicap, medical condition, AIDS/HIV status, veteran status, or socioeconomic background.

A nonprofit here in NYC I'm working with is seeking a Web design agency to refresh their (fairly straightforward) website. This will include a visual redesign, some backend coding to implement a new events calendar, and possibly a CMS for in-office editing of website content.

If interested to apply, please send links to past sites you have designed.
