Work for Strange Horizons! (Proofreaders, Articles Editors, and Web Staff)

Strange Horizons, a weekly web-based speculative fiction magazine founded in 2000, is adding staff members! Read below for our current openings.

Keep in mind that Strange Horizons is a non-profit organization, and that these are all volunteer positions; no one on our staff is paid. We find working for Strange Horizons to be an immensely rewarding experience, and we hope you will too.

Please note: Strange Horizons staff are not allowed to submit fiction, poetry, or artwork to the magazine. Staff members are allowed (and encouraged!) to write articles and reviews, but those are generally unpaid. We also ask that you do not apply unless you can make a commitment of at least six months.

To apply, please submit résumé and cover letter to jobs@strangehorizons.com. Questions? E-mail Kristin at kwaller@gmail.com.

-----

Proofreader: We look to add two additional proofreaders to our copyediting team. Previous experience with proofreading is nice, but not necessary. What is necessary is that you have a good eye for detail, a strong grasp on the rules of written English, and the ability to familiarize yourself with our in-house Style Guide. Proofreaders also must have regular internet access, since all proofreading work is done online. The position requires between one and four hours of work per week.

Articles Editor: We're looking for an additional editor for the Articles Department. Applicants should have a strong interest in (and familiarity with) one or more of our core subject areas: speculative fiction, science, and history/culture. They should also be open to considering eclectic article topics that will appeal to a diverse reader base. Applicants must have good language and communication skills. Ideal candidates will also have previous experience in editing, writing, or interviewing.

The primary responsibilities of the Articles Editor will be as follows:
-- Review queries and submissions of articles and interviews, in collaboration with other Articles Editors.
-- Edit accepted pieces, in collaboration with authors and other Articles Editors.
-- As part of reviewing and editing, fact-check and source-check.
-- Locate images to accompany accepted pieces, and obtain necessary permissions for images.
-- Track down appropriate links for articles.
-- Possibly assist Senior Articles Editor with galleying of accepted pieces, depending on experience with HTML or willingness to learn it.
-- Maintain regular email communication, in fulfillment of the above responsibilities.

Knowledge of HTML is helpful, although not required. Regular email access is absolutely necessary. Estimated workload: 5-10 hours per week.

Assistant Webmaster: We're looking to add one or two enthusiastic volunteers to the web team that keeps Strange Horizons running smoothly on a day-to-day basis. Applicants should be comfortable with HTML and CSS. Familiarity with Unix, PHP, or Perl is a plus (but not a requirement). Previous experience with a web-based content management system such as Drupal would be a bonus. This position requires approximately two hours of work per week.

Copy Edit a Newsletter story

I need to have a competent editor go over a story for my newsletter (around 2500 words). The story is currently being translated into Japanese (the newsletter is bilingual) but the translator is giving feedback to the effect that 'people without knowledge of this topic aren't really going to understand many parts of this.'

I don't think that's true, but because I wrote it, I can't tell. I need you - who knows nothing about Japanese woodblock prints - to read this item, and make comments/edits/suggestions/etc. to help improve it, if necessary.

The story (with illustrations) is in a .pdf file here. And the raw text is here.

A sample issue of the newsletter - to let you see the typical style, etc., is here.

And I'm hoping that you would consider doing this on a 'barter', perhaps for a copy of say, this print?

Video logger/editor in NYC

We have a 10-hour lecture on medical ethics, from a jewish perspective, that needs to be edited down into 15-minute chunks (or so). At the very least, we need someone to log and capture the tapes from MiniDV to DV format so we can edit in Final Cut Pro. If this person is able to edit, even better. If they can add some b-roll type footage (graphics, charts, powerpoints, etc), much better. If they can then convert to internet-ready formats, wowza.

They need to work quickly, be able to follow the material, at least enough to do the b-roll. We prefer someone in New York City.
