Technical Writer

For mBalance, a company developing SMS networking servers (routing, applications, storage, billing, etc.)

Looking for a highly competent Technical Writer to produce and manage the product documentation of the mBalance products. The Technical Writer will interact directly with Engineers and process the existing R&D documentation of the TextPass products into end user documentation. The role requires a technical background and an expert knowledge of word processing tools such as MS Word.

Required:

 * Native English language skills;
 * At least 3 years experience as technical writer, preferably in a software product environment;
 * Expert knowledge and experience of word processing, preferably MS Word;
 * Good knowledge and experience of graphic editing tools, preferably MS PowerPoint;
 * Proven ability to conform to company documentation style;
 * Solid technical background supported by technical training;
 * Proven ability to quickly grasp new technical information;
 * Experience with document management;
 * Professional attitude and eagerness to deliver high quality work;
 * Involvement in technical and commercial product document reviews.

It's a great opportunity - cool company, growing very quickly, they know that documentation is a very important part of the process, nice people, good atmosphere. Plus, you'd become my colleague, and I am -as we all know- very good company. If you live outside of Amsterdam/the Netherlands but want to move here, I know the company helps out with the moving process (though I don't know to what extent - I didn't have to move myself).

This is an in-house job based in Amsterdam. Telecommuting is possible to some extent; you'd have to be physically present part of the time, though.

The above is a mix of my own input and the job description we have, by the way, and I typed it in under three minutes. So if it looks goofy, meh. :)

Online developer at Spokane newspaper

We've got a great web team here in Spokane, a newsroom that buys into an online future, and we're willing to rewrite the rules of doing journalism on the web. But right now we're stuck on a site running ASP, with a design to match.

So we're moving to Django, leaving our old site behind and relaunching from scratch. Our focus is intensely local; we want to give people in our community not just the news, but places to explore what they're passionate about. We're going to build something great, and then we're going to keep building great things. And we want your help.

About us
- We work for a family-owned newspaper, running spokesmanreview.com, spokane7.com, and other sites devoted to local news and entertainment.
- We're offering competitive salary and benefits. We'll also help you relocate to Spokane, an affordable city tucked into a beautiful corner of the Pacific Northwest.

What you should have
- HTML/CSS/XML/Javascript background. You know the drill. We've got a great multimedia team, so editing and production skills aren't what we're looking for. We want a coder who likes to build the tools that our newsroom and readers will use.
- Understanding of database development. Everything we do has a database underneath. We need someone with a strong, user-focused feel for the design and development of data projects.
- A record of solid web development. This developer will help us build spokesman.com from the ground up. We'll be running Ellington, so Python/Django experience is ideal. But if you've got a track record in Ruby or PHP and Django sounds interesting, let's talk.
- People skills. Our web team sits right in the newsroom, and the relationships we have with reporters, editors and photographers are crucial to our site's success. This developer will be working with all types of people, with all levels of comfort with technology.

If this sounds like you, send your resume and links to Ryan Pitts at ryanp@spokesman.com.

Web developer in South-East England

Hey! We're looking for web developers to work on the next version of our open source social networking framework (and the projects that spring out of it, which are both end-user websites and intranet facilities).
We are:

An innovative Oxford based start-up, hard at work bringing social networking to business, education, non-profits and anyone we can make more efficient.

Committed to open source software and business methodologies.

A friendly and relaxed, but driven, small team.

Interested in dynamic people who bring something new to the table.

You are:

Creative but level-headed.

Both able and willing to clearly share your own ideas as well as listen to and discuss other people's with an open mind.

A genuine web user who understands net culture, is excited by the medium and sees its wider implications.

An old hand at programming for LAMP environments, with some experience of object orientated methodologies. Bonus points for additional experience with any of CakePHP, the Yahoo! UI library or similar, and IIS. We care much more about what you've done than what certificates you have: show us the web apps you're most proud of.

Friendly and relaxed, but efficient.

A fluent English speaker.

Happy with both telecommuting and working from the office.

Willing to work at a company called "Curverider", with a largely non-violent attitude towards people who use words like "folksonomy".

To apply:

Send us your CV, preferably in PDF or a common wordprocessor format, to us at info@curverider.co.uk. Also include a brief covering letter about you, a website URL that represents you (eg a Facebook profile), a web application you've written and the answers to these six questions, including as much or as little detail as you think is necessary:

Describe, in English, a simple user login mechanism, including potential security risks and how to overcome them.

What is AJAX? How does it work? When shouldn't you use it?

Explain inheritance.

Pick three community websites and describe their relative merits.

What, for you, are the most important aspects of a web application?

Register with http://eduspaces.net/ and explore the system. How would you improve it?

Contract-to-perm Web Programmer (.net preferred)

I've got two job opportunities - you may apply to one or both.

short term: Contract work. We need a kick-ass .net (flavor up to you) and SQL web programmer to create a few large, CMS-driven sites from scratch. You are welcome to bring your own libraries and user controls to the table.

Work starts immediately and will be enough to keep your attention full-time for at least 4 weeks. Documentation and scope established, look and feel done & sliced - we just need you to code, code, code.

Project Manager is a former developer and will help get you up to speed. Telecommuting is fine, being local would be awesome.

long term: Contract-to-perm. Any language/platform (.net/SQL preferred), we want a superstar developer to lay down a foundation for a future programming department. Establish coding standards, create libraries, and help develop a core suite of CMS tools.

You'd be working with a team of folks on project planning and scope, and with gfx/HTML/CSS people on final production.

We are nice people in an established webdev firm, if a little overwhelmed by the amount of business we have recently attracted. Shoot me some of your work and a bit about you to get the ball rolling.

Science Museum Executive Director

Colburn Earth Science Museum, Asheville, NC seeks a dynamic and energetic individual for full-time museum management. 4-year degree with experience in fund-raising, administration, grant writing and financial management required. Geology background and/or advanced degree a plus. Resume and cover letter to: Search Committee, Colburn Earth Science Museum, PO Box 1617, Asheville, NC 28802.

That's the listing that goes everywhere. For you, my fellow mefites, let me say that the Colburn is a charming small museum with a full time staff of four. The director will, in other words, be doing his/her own administrative work. We used to be purely a gem & mineral museum; the change of focus to Earth Science took place in 2004. There are some dedicated volunteers, a sweet collection of gems and minerals, a great selection of kids programs, a tiny mine installation you can go through with a detonator that makes a great explosion noise and not much money. At all. Therefore, our most pressing need is for a development person; you must have fundraising background to be considered for this position.

We're a pretty nice group of people to work with and Asheville is a great place to live. This could be a great job for the right person. People love this museum and with reason, because it is an old fashioned, charming little museum that also fills a very, very important niche in local science education. http://www.colburnmuseum.org
