Web Design/Flash Design for Scientific Visualization
September 23, 2009 7:11 AM

Our environmental sciences lab is looking for someone to put the final polish on a number of web apps, portals, and visualization products we've developed. Many more products are in the pipeline, so we hope to make this a long term position.

While we're still defining the job description, we feel it's going to be easier to get a designer up to speed on the science than a scientist or programmer up to speed on usability and aesthetics. Our core expertise is in mapping and GIS. We need to expand our skills towards more general information graphics. Think of the dynamic diagrams on the New York Times website, Edward Tufte, etc.

I don't want to get more specific, because the important thing here is finding someone with the creative skills and we want to see who is out there. I don't want to get bogged down in specific technologies (although Flash seems to be a must for our short term direction) because intellectual curiosity is more important, as is the confidence to apply past design experience in what might be an entirely new direction.

payscale: TBD
job type: full-time
