Job Opening: Newsroom Services Coordinator
April 29, 2019 2:08 PM

Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, defending and empowering public-interest journalism, is looking for a full-time Newsroom Services Coordinator.

This role is the first point of contact for news organizations requesting services or support from Freedom of the Press Foundation.

About our services to news organizations

SecureDrop is an open source whistleblower submission system used by journalists to communicate with sources. It is currently in use at more than 70 media organizations worldwide, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, The Intercept, and NBC. We lead the development of SecureDrop, and we provide installation help, support and training to many of the news organizations using it.

In addition, we offer broader digital security training services to individuals and groups involved in the media. Our trainers follow an individualized intake process to develop training materials to match the unique needs of the client. We also offer security consulting services to help news organizations protect their sources, their staff, and their work.

Responsibilities

As Newsroom Services Coordinator, you will organize FPF’s free and paid services to news organizations. You will have primary responsibility for the client intake process, relationship management, and tier 1 support for SecureDrop. You will work closely with the digital security training team in the coordination of trainings and consulting services, and you will help standardize FPF’s portfolio of services where it makes sense to do so.

This role involves a significant amount of ticket-based work, document management, scheduling, facilitating phone calls, and coordinating with other team members. Over time, it offers the opportunity for advancement towards more technically demanding tasks, with continued mentorship by other team members.

This position is open to remote work within American time zones, or to work in our New York City office.

Skills and Experience

Required:

- 2+ years applicable professional experience (e.g., in a project coordination or technical support role)
- Experience working with issue trackers, and ticketing systems
- Impeccable written and in-person communications
- Experience with scheduling and other administrative tasks
- You know your way around the command line, you know what a firewall is, you understand the difference between a client and a server — and you are eager to learn more.

Great to have:

- Experience in a technical support or sales engineering role for a complex technical project
- Network security and troubleshooting experience, including firewall configuration
- Working knowledge of public key cryptography (e.g., PGP, GPG)
- Experience working with journalism/media organizations
- Experience using version control systems (e.g., Git)
- Experience contributing to free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) projects in any capacity
