Position Overview

Established in August 2006 by young researchers at the early planning stages of the fourth International Polar Year, the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) has evolved into the pre-eminent international organization for polar researchers in the early stages of their careers. Now comprising around 2900 members from 76 countries, APECS represents an international and interdisciplinary body of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, early faculty members, educators and others with interests in the Polar Regions and the cryosphere. APECS works closely with many international organizations and leading polar researchers, educators and funding agencies to provide a continuum of knowledge in the area of polar research for generations to come.

The APECS web presence is central to the operation of this international organization. One function is to link members across continents and disciplines through tools such as mailing lists (http://apecs.is/mailinglists), literature discussions (http://apecs.is/literature), mentor (http://apecs.is/mentors) and outreach (http://apecs.is/education-outreach/catalogue) databases, and national committee representation (http://apecs.is/national-committees) to name a few. The APECS website also serves the key purpose of transmitting news to our membership and colleagues, posted in categorized articles and packaged into a monthly newsletter (http://apecs.is/newsletter-archive).

APECS provides many resources through its website. These take the form of things such as polar acronym listings (http://apecs.is/whos-who-in-polar-science), jobs & opportunities (http://apecs.is/jobs), funding (http://apecs.is/funding-resources), speaker (http://apecs.is/education-outreach/cool-speakers), and graduate programme (http://apecs.is/graduate-programmes) databases, conference tips (http://apecs.is/conference-tips), recorded and embedded webinars (http://apecs.is/webinars), and education & outreach resources (http://apecs.is/education-outreach), among other resources.

The APECS site also serves as a central coordinating point for APECS activities and events, using our calendar (http://apecs.is/events), central planning and informational sites created on an event-by-event basis (http://apecs.is/workshops), and reporting events after they happen to share with the rest of the APECS community (http://apecs.is/news).

apecs.is is hosted by the Arctic Portal (http://arcticportal.org/), and is run on the framework of the Joomla! content management system with extensive further modifications, components, and plugins. The person filling the post is expected to engage with the existing website, extend its capabilities, help increase usability, contribute content when available, and handle basic troubleshooting for the site. This will require excellence with internet technologies, the ability and desire to learn and explore new systems and functionalities, and a basic to advanced understanding of Joomla!, with knowledge of HTML, CSS and PHP being particularly helpful. For specialized tasks or those that the contractor is not able to fulfill personally, it is expected that they will manage freelance workers to complete the necessary jobs.

The contractor will work with the APECS leadership, and specifically the APECS Director on a day-to-day basis. This opportunity will require project management skills, the ability to work with and direct an international team across many time zones. The contactor can be located in Tromsø, Norway or work remotely from anywhere else in the world with a strong Internet connection. English will be the working language. As this is a contract position, the contractor is expected to supply their own equipment and working space and will also be responsible for their own taxes and insurance. The position will be part time with a flexible schedule and remuneration will be on a time-reported/task-completed basis that is performance incentivized and commensurate with the experience level of the applicant. It is desirable that the applicants are familiar with Arctic, Antarctic, or cryospheric research.

Specific projects will be proposed as they arise, but will include tasks such as:
• Monitoring and maintaining APECS jobs, news, events and other web content to supplement the activity of the APECS Council
• Setting up webpages for particular APECS initiatives and activities
• Linking between the APECS site and various social networking platforms
• Modifying the APECS calendar (running on EventList) to add additional categories
• Modifying or replacing the login system for the website for debugging
• Better integrate the APECS member map into the joining process
• Contract out specialist freelance tasks and manage these contracts
• Manage APECS forms and databases (with Fabrik or a new module)
• Streamline the content and organization of apecs.is and its appearance
• Video editing of various webinars, promotional materials, etc.
• Other arising tasks suggested by the enthusiastic new contractor!

Application Procedure:
Interested applicants should send a complete pdf package (all documents in one file) to info@apecs.is. The package should include:
• a cover letter detailing how their previous experience fulfils the required and desired experience and personal attributes
• a short statement on suggestions for improving the APECS website/making it more user-friendly
• CV/resume, and
• 3 references who can speak to website abilities and work ethic.
Applications will be reviewed 15 November and remain open until position is filled. Skype interviews for top candidates will take place the first week of December
