Summary:
The Disney Corporate Taxonomist serves as a subject matter expert for media metadata and as a committee facilitator involving Companywide media asset management (MAM) initiatives.

The Disney Corporate Taxonomist is responsible for identifying and guiding a comprehensive strategy for semantic interoperability by researching industry and government standards, technical writing, digital media cataloguing, and advising the Company on metadata standards and practices to support initiatives including digital production, preservation, re-use, and distribution. The position involves four distinct areas in semantic technology:

1. Media content metadata standards
2. Cataloging and indexing procedures
3. Business nomenclatures and vocabularies for media products / brands
4. General application of taxonomy and ontology construction


Primary Duties:

• Track and coordinate the work of media catalogers throughout the business units of the Company with the goal of synchronizing metadata standards for consistency and technical interoperability.

• Champion the implementation of Companywide standards in nomenclature and metadata, influencing relevant decisions within specific business units.

• Ensure business compliance by producing, testing, and promoting nomenclature and metadata ‘Best Practices’.

• Communicate and facilitate related training, presentations and project meetings. Involves a high level of interaction with both technology and operational management and executives throughout the Company.

• Serve as a domain expert and project liaison between corporate media technology initiatives, Disney business units and external industry partners.

• Guide, expand, and maintain a comprehensive corporate taxonomy and metadata schemas for the Walt Disney Company.

• Provide guidance to various business unit media collections on compatible thesauri and ontology construction.

• Guide the business requirements of multi-lingual taxonomies applying to Disney’s global media and entertainment reach.

• Collaborate regularly with corporate entities such as Disney’s Media Technology Board, Enterprise Information Technology services, Enterprise Portal, Studio Post Production, Worldwide Media Library Services, Disney-ABC Television Group media librarians, etc.

• Actively research and recommend metadata search technology tools, industry developments, and related advances in the academic, entertainment, library, and museum communities.

• Represent TWDC at industry associations and organizations including AMIA, ISAN, MPAA (XML related standards), STC Digital Preservation, SMPTE W25 working groups, etc.


Required skills:

o Possess an advanced degree in Library Science, Museum Studies, Linguistics, or equivalent knowledge management experience.

o 3-6 years of experience in information architecture, knowledge and/or content management, library, or other collection-related disciplines.

o Familiar with current concepts, practices, and trends in media asset management, digital asset management, search engines/portals, database and data modeling structures, etc.

o Ability to synthesize complex technical concepts, protocols and standards, and communicate them into meaningful business activities and/or priorities.

o Experience developing controlled vocabularies.

o Experience with thesaurus construction and maintenance.

o Experience with creating metadata models or schemas.

o Familiar with various ontologies and current Internet standards developments in Web 2.0, etc.

o Ability to collaborate with business stakeholders and facilitate diverse, global business needs with active participation and group consensus.

o Possess very strong communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to communicate sophisticated taxonomy/ontology/nomenclature concepts to audiences of all levels.
